H&R/NEF scope mounting?

I'm kinda new to optics shooting; got alot of leverguns with peep sights. But that will all change when my Utra Varmint 223rem arrives. Questions: 1]what is the actual size of the Weaver type rail that NEF supplies with these rifles, so one can select rings that fit the width of the rail? 2]And what are some guide lines when ordering rings regarding height of rings relating to objective size? 3]specifically in the 223 handis military ammo i.e. 5.56mm is not recommended, so is any box of ammo labeled 223 remington Okay as far as NEF is concerned? [if it matches the 1:12 twist]

tm7, Standard weaver mount style rings will work.As far as I know there is only one weaver mount style.I suggest burris zee rings in high configuration, or go to wallmart and buy weaver brand 4x4 rings.There are many different brands of scope rings ,but make sure they are medium or high length for hammer clearance.I wouldn't shoot 5.56 nato ammo in any rifle that is marked .223 remington,THEY ARE NOT THE SAME. When you get the rifle it will have a small sheet that will say to use 55 grain or less for best accuracy.I would go with the factory recomendations.

The scope rail will work with any weaver style ring, although the Burris Zee rings fit tight in most applications that I have mounted. Those with an adjustable clamp won't be a problem at all.

Most scope interference will be at the power ring and hammer, so most scopes will require a medium or high ring to mount without the hammer hitting. Height just depends on the scope you choose. If you happen to get one that the power rings is on the small side, or the scope is long enough that the power ring/ocular lens is behind the hammer throw, you could get away with low or medium rings.

Any ammo marketed as .223 Remington will work, but you will find that bullet weights 55gr and below will shoot best. A for sure ammo to get is the Winchester Value Pack in the white box, 45gr JHP....an excellent choice for accurate shooting in the .223 Ultra. Some have found that other heavier bullets shoot good too, but the white box ammo is a no brainer.

TM7, rings come sized for .22 recievers (narrower than weaver style) and the weaver (centerfire) size. They are not interchangable, but at first glance look similar. Rings sized for a .22 rail but "weaver style" will not fit on an H&R rail....<><.... :grin:

High rings should be high enough,  I have a Mueller Eraticator 8.5-25x50 on my .243 Ultra using high Burris sig zees with plenty of room to install the scope covers. Burris medium rings are .270" high, highs are .420" high. Here's a handy reference chart for ring height choice, but keep in mind that the hammer is where interferrence comes, not the objective end of the scope. Make sure the ebay rings aren't just Burris Signature, they need to be Signature Zee or Zee rings, the Signture only rings are dovetail rings for dovetail bases, the twist in type. Zee= weaver style.

I have the Leupold high rings with Weaver base on both my Handi's, 25-06 Ultra and 30-06 synthetic. Work well on both and are available at Wal-Mart. Reasonably priced, too.

With all NEF and H&R's I use NEF bases and LEUPOLD high rings

 I get from Wally World for about $ 16.99 + tax.Work great,

The Burris Signature Zee rings are on sale at Midway for $25, the sale ends today, though. They have a minimum order amount of $40 so hope ya need something else... :wink:
