OK finally got geared up to load 7X30 Waters, new Win. 30-30 Brass, dies and such. Resized the brass and dies pull the neck down to fit the 7mm bullet but only for about 3/8", then the neck jumps back up to 30 Cal for about 3/16" then breaks into the standard 30-30 shoulder.

IS THIS CORRECT? :?

I have never loaded these before and the double stepped neck bothers me a little. Can assume it will "fire form" the shouldter to the proper angle out to the base of where the cartridge is necked down for the 7mm bullet?

Next question is that if I am fire forming these I am considering using 35gr. of W748 to push a 120gr FN Nosler, 120gr Spt Sierra with CCI Mag Rifle Primers to set it off. Sound about right?

Another option to consider is to look at EA Brown. They sell 7x30 brass for $25/100 last I checked. Cheaper than fire forming your own. Of course, you don't get to shoot as much either!

Don T. - the picture above me sounds like what you have, which is correct. I know how you felt - did the same thing at my first forming. The guy that taught me how to fireform used the 150 grn. Sierra (heaviest bullet availible to us) and lowest powder charge for that bullet. (actually I believe it was down-sized by 2 grns.) I'm not sure if this is proper practice or not - but it works for me forming .30 Herrett, .357 Herrett, 7mmTCU, and of course the 7-30 Waters. I've been following another forum (just for handloading) where they use 10 grns. of a given powder, enough Cream - of Wheat to fill the case partially, and some type of plug. Plug material being anything from Kleenex to wax slugs. I've never done this, and really curious to try, but I think I'll wait until I meet someone in person that can take me by the hand - know what I mean?

Thanks for the help everyone I really appreicate it. The pictures were a big help and thats exactly the way mine look. Think I will load em up with 35gr. of Winchester 748 and some 120gr FP noslers to fire form.

Again thanks for the help, I have found this forum a wealth of information for someone just starting out with the contenders...

Don,

I don't fool with reduced or cream of wheat loads when fireforming. I just use standard loads and find them to be as, if not more, accurate as a load from a case that has been fireformed. These strange looking double shoulder loads have never given me trouble and have even taken a few deer.

I wouldn't load them hot but I don't low end load them either I use
whatever load my barrel likes and as mentioned above the rounds are as good as a fire fomed one I do the same with a 7TCU
That bullet I have posted came from the off shoulder of a deer I took
I am very impressed with both the 7's I own

I agree with most of the above posts. When I size my brass to 7x30 the first time, I don't set the die to full length size. I set the die so the brass will just go into the barrel and the barrel close on the frame. I like that "second shoulder" up as high as possible so the brass fire forms right to my barrel without excess movement in the area of the neck/shoulder. Of the few brass that I have seen fail in 7x30 waters, it has been the rim or case head blowing off, or the the neck blowing off right at the shoulder from excess wear due to over-sizing.
