24 inch barrel for my 94 AE
« on: November 23, 2004, 12:28:37 PM »
Got  3  30/30's, hunting season is over.  time to mess around.  Where
can I find a 24 inch barrel for my 94 AE ?  I am curious as my 1895 CB
Marlin shoots better groups than my 94....with a 26 inch barrrel.
I'm thinking perhaps the  site radius is the difference.
I'd like to look into changing my 20 inch  for a 24 inch barrel.

any info on websites,  would be helpful,  as would a general idea of
  prices.........thank you.
30-30....45/70...... does anything else matter?

Try this for starters:

If you do go through with this, be sure to post here with your results.  I've been thinking about sticking a 24" barrel and full length magazine onto my Marlin 444, and I'd be very interested in anything you learn if/when you tackle this project.

snowdog and leverfan:  The Montana Rifleman rebarrelled one of my 94AEs in 444 with a 26" bbl and full length magazine tube, and did a beautiful job.  The rifle is incredibly accurate with all sorts of handloads and I used the Beartooth bullets and load data to recently take a large russian Boar and a big cow Elk.

They are up on the net, just add a www and a .com after the name and you should get to them.

snowdog - my brother's 1895 CB in 45-70 is an incredibly accurate rifle right out of the box - dang, but he hasn't ahd to do a thing to it except make certain the scope is sighted in.  His gives 3 shot cloverleafs with either the 300 or 405 gn factory loads and he has no desire to reload for it.

You might be able to get that 30-30 to shoot better.  I don't know how old a rifle or how many shots you have through it but if it is fairly new, you might be able to improve its accuracy with firelapping the bore.  Both Veral Smith (who has his own forum here) and Beartooth Bullets sell the materials and instructions for this process, and it works.

I used this process on my 20" 94AE in 444 - dang thing has the Marlin micro-groove bbl but after firelapping, 300 gn cast bullets at max load were all going into the same hole at 100 yds.  Firelapping dropped my group sozes to near an inch or under at that distance.  You may wish to try this first.  HTH.  Mikey.

Thanks  guys I will look into the info you both posted,   My 94AE 30/30
is  about a year old,  have  shot about  200 jacketed rnds thru it.

It is that time of year,  hunting season (big game) is over,  And I
want to make a couple of changes.......bored.

the Win 94  shoots the usual 3inch or less groups,  but  it seems to
me  my 26inch Marlin seems to shoot good groups with  more ease.

I have  3   30/30's  and they are all 20 inch barrels,  not interested in
the  AI  version,  but want to try a 24 inch barrel,  one for accuracy,
but  also  just to have a bit of difference in the 3  30/30  One 336, and
  one  pre  64  Win.

I will inform  as to what is going on,  in the future.

  Thanks  again.
