williams WGRS peep sight question
« on: November 24, 2004, 06:36:12 AM »
when using the williams WGRS peep sight on handi rifles, can a shooter still use the factory front sight, or must it be replaced too?..also, when using this peep sight,  does the factory rear sight have to be removed so not to be in the visual way?  any thoughts on these sights would be appreciated. thanks

I put an open blade Williams Guide sight on a Handi barrel I had and replaced the front sight with an H&R front sight for a .22 Hornet. I had been informed at that time (about a year ago) that that particular front sight blade was the highest front sight made by H&R and it worked fine. I would think a front sight from any of the superlight barrels should he high also. Now since they have introduced a couple of superlight barrels perhaps they have a higher front sight. It would not hurt if the front sight blade was even a bit higher than the .22 Hornet front blade....<><....

by the way, the base of the WGS is the same for the peep sight and the open blade, you can even switch the inserts from blade to peep and they are available seperately in their catalog, so I think the application would be the same for an open blade and a peep,,,,

I use the WGRS on my .357mag and a Williams FP (From NEF) on my .357max I had to use the hornet front blade with both to get correct elevation, They work great, I don't know about leaving the rear sight on I didn't try I just took them off. They may work with the factory front blade but I don't think you would be able to sight in past 75yards give or take a few. 8)

I called customer service--they said the one in the catalog only fits the target and buffalo classic-the front site is not high enough.  The Williams catalog lists a "new" one for Handis.  I am waiting until after deer season to pursue further.

i apologize for not stating that my rifle & questions are geared for the 45-70 barrel. among you 45-70 handi rifle owners that went with the williams wgrs peep sight, could you have used the original front sight and been able to zero properly?  can the factory rear be left on without  problems?..thanks again

Does anyone know if there are taller replacement front sights available from manufactures other than H&R that will work with the WGRS? Or has someone come up with a do-it-yourself design that works well? :D
