New at fly fishing

Last year I was on vacation in Maine and stopped in Kittery Trading Post. They have the most awesome fly shop i have ever seen in the northeast well much more than i see in Ct.  I found some dragon fly flies called "damsels"???   I tried then lastyear between bass fishing and had good success but a lot of misses because of the larger size of them.  But the fun was counting strikes on each cast.  On some casts I got up to 9 strikes it was just crazy they finally pulled off the wings.  I just got into this more this month and figured i'd research it more over the winter and buy more flys since i have 4 new different weight rod setups(flyrods). Well there stocking big salmon here and i want to go after them too its fly fishing only. I found a place called the flyshack.com who has smaller damsels down to 12's so i ordered a bunch of them to try so i can get more hook ups with the smaller hooks plus i ordered quite a few streamers and flys too.  I found his website has some states listed for rivers with a hatch chart so it told me what to buy and what time of year to use it.  Its a head start for me a non fly fisherman anyway but matching the hatch and time on the water is the best teacher.  Well i'm looking forward to try my luck soon with the big salmon!!!!!  But the damsel action this summer is going to be awesome again!!!!  :D    BigBill

I hope i can see those #18 flys to tie them on?  There so small!!

One other question is how do you store your flys at home???  I'm looking for a little chest of drawers with  1" X 1" squares smaller flys or larger 1 1/2" X  1 1/2" squares for streamers and bass stuff too??  Do they make anything like this??  I want to collect flys too.

Jann's netcraft carries the stuff to make your own dragonflies in sizes from 1/16 to 3/64 if you are tying your own. That should allow you to size them as you need to and get a bit smaller than size 12. As far as storage, I just use good boxes and keep my flies in them all year round. Just make sure that you aren't keeping them where they can get mashed or deformed and you should be ok.

one thing that I have noticed with bass is that you really have to let them take it under. Give them a second before you cross his eyes. this has given me more hook-ups in the past. just let it sit if they short strike. sometimes that will get them to inhale it again.
