after watching a deer slowly walk away after a mmmmmiiiissss , and not being able to eject the shell, my heart was broken. it was due to water around the casing (it was raining hard earlier) . i knew there had to be a better way to get a casing out so i took my dremel and made a little notch, just big enough for the tip of a knife in the side of the reciever. it works like a charm. i wish the factory would think about including this in the design. thanks fred m .

You are welcome. I don't think the factory would ever do something like that notch. That would be admitting they do a lousy chambering or ejector job. They would incriminate them self, that indeed would be bad news.

I am curious about fred's notch suggestion... and I'm very intrigued.

I didn't understand "..made a little notch, just big enough for the tip of a knife in the side of the reciever"... where in the receiver?

So I am wondering what I missed by not seeing the original..

Do Not make a notch in the receiver! This will do nothing good. The notch must be made in the barrel's breech face. The other poster miss-typed.

sorry lone star for the incorrect term, i am not a gun mechanic , but i figured folks who owned handis would be able to figure out just exactly where you would want to stick the tip of a knife blade to get a spent casing out. i did some resaerch and figured out what a reciever is:" In firearms terminology, the receiver is the part of the firearm that houses the operating parts of the gun. In most cases, it is made up of forged or stamped metal, and the moving parts reciprocate and cycle within it.

In strictly legal terms, the receiver is the actual firearm itself, and as such it is the controlled part (without which operating is impossible). Generally, the law views the receiver as that part of a firearm housing that has the serial number upon it. Thus, in the case that a firearm has multiple receivers, the legally controlled one is the one that is serialized" there, now i know !!! i vow to never again use the incorrect term :wink:

We want to put the notch in the rear of the bore not in the breech.

was this process of making it so you can get at the case with a "tool", verry hard? Is there anyway that you can mess it up? I would like to do it to mine but i dont want future problems to come from this procedure. Just wondering thats all. Thought I would ask before i went doing it. Thanks in advance. Hank.

For those that dont want to cut your rifles at the end of the chamber just carry a 6 to 8-inch piece of brass rod smaller in diameter than your caliber to drop down the bore and knock the stuck case out.

ya, that gets put on the list when i go hunt prariee dogs. but its a pain to carry a cleaning rod thruout the dog town. I thought that it might be better to try the process. Will it work on a .223?

Freds notch will work on any rimless case but then you need to carry a tool to pry out the case with anyway so I just carry the short Brass rod. It is only 6-inches long, not a cleaning rod. Some say they pry out the case with the tip of a knife but I have broken off a tip or two prying on things I shouldnt have.

Alright I am gona get a 6in rod somtime in the future and use it. you just get em from your local hardware store right? That would save me from my luck of butchering my rifle. Though it is a awsome tip, I will try the Brass Rod first :-D . Thanks guys. Hank

henry 1 the mod was not very difficult to make. i just used my dremel with a narrow grinding stone to make a small half moon shape in the right side of that hole in the back of the barrel (inside joke) mine was not as professional looking as fred m's but it works like a charm. i kept an empty casing to judge the depth and angle of the slot just enough to get under the lip on the case. i would think that if you can knock the case out with a piece of brass rod it would not put undue stress on a good pocket knife. let me know if this helps. i will email pics to you if you would like. i will be gone for a week but will check back soon.

Henry 1 I got my brass rod at a welding shop, I was in buying welding r

rods, The old boy gave me a brass braxing rod 36" long. got it

about 0.200 in Dia. then you can cut off about 6" or 8" to carry.

Still have enough left to drive out a real stuck peice of brass. Marv.

why not cut a stick and poke it out? sticks usually abound in the woods. if ya gotta, carry a breakdown cleaning rod. :eek:

ya thats what i have been carrying.

A Stick? I spose i could conect enough shoots of grass together and try that. Though i dont think it would hold up, too flimsey.
