Gentlemen,
As some might guess my favorite gun for about every thing would be the
45-70 Marlin 1895 which i have three at the present time. What i like about the 45-70 is you can load it ( up ) or ( down ) to suit your needs.
To me its just an all around good round. Good luck to all.....Joe........

I picked up a used Marlin 375.  The 20" barrel is just right, it has more oomph than a .30-30 and less recoil than a .45-70.

That said, all I've taken with the 375 is one antelope, but my .45-70 has taken a mule deer buck and a bull elk.  Both worked as desired.

I think I've got all the typical centerfire calibres in the Marlin safe, 218 Bee on up to 45-70.  Guess I don't have a 450, nor plans for one, ditto the 480.  The most used one of the bunch is my '78 vintage 444.  It's taken elk, mulie, white-tail, antelope (why not, most of mine are shot well inside 150 yards), one moose, and about all the small stuff from coyote, fox, badger, praire dogs, etc.   Used the Sierra 180's on the sod pups, boy did they ever expand! Haven't taken a bobcat with it, but with cast round balls it's done most of the small game too.  Just for grins and giggles, it's also taken a few birds with shot loads, out to 20 yards, not too far off a 410 if you're luck is in.  My vote goes for the .444 as my most used meat getter.  Normally use either the old style Barnes 270's (getting low on these though), the old style Barnes 300 gr., paperpatch cast, or the Lee 310 gr. slug as cast and checked.  All work just fine over a full case of 4198.

Although my favorite cartridge is the .38-55, I didn't vote for it as my favorite deer cartridge. I haven't used a .30-30 for deer for a number of years, but it's still the best all around deer cartridge around.
The .30-30 has a wide variety of factory loads to choose from, and also an even more flexible choice of bullets to choose from for reloading. It can be loaded to shoot extremely flat with 130 grain flat points, or heavy with 180 grain flat points.
No matter which bullet I have used, the accuracy can be anywhere from very good to target type accuracy. So the .30-30 gets my vote as the best.

Put me down for the Triple 4, This is the first year I've used it, just got an older microgroove 444ss this summer with a bushnell 1.75-4x with the circle recticle. used hornady 300gr xtp over H335 to take a nice 4x4 whitetail 50yrds on the run through the brush (lucky shot for me). The xtp performed well but I've got some Sierra 300gr JFPs on hand that I would like to try, anybody have any experience with them in the 444?

Thanks

45/70
Loads consist of a 350gr Hornady Round-Nose over a case-full of Hodgdon H4198. Velocity is just over 2300 fps for approx 4100 ft/lbs of energy; more than enough for ANY deer within the 200yd range of this cartridge.
Recoil in my NEF Handi-Rifle is nothing short of BRUTAL, but it sure whacks em' dead from ANY angle !
Go MAGNUM/MAX LOAD or GO HOME !
Always use MUCH more gun than the minimum required to do the job.
Recoil is your FRIEND...It lets you know you are using something WORTHWHILE !
