I can't find the den
« on: December 01, 2004, 12:40:40 PM »
I have this place where the beaver are unwelcome.
Someone messed with them and they are smart.
I got one in a castor pile just above the dam on the south side.
The whole area above the dam is only 3 feet higher than the water at most, except the road abutment which is rather prohibitive for them I think.

The dam is 200 feet from the road.

Here is a pic of the area and some details.

The white line by the red 1 is the dam.
The blue is the only spot on that side where the ground is more than 3 feet above the water.
The yellow is the same only there is a massive steel wall there blocking the access to the ground in addition to the riprap there.
Inside the green circle, the water is about 3 feet deep and the bank is about 8 feet high, but it is below the dam.
The purple is where the ground starts to slope up.
If you were to draw a line from east to west directly through the middle of the beaver pond, you would see roughly where the water is about 15 feet deep. The south side is shallow enough that it freezes to the bottom.
This depth goes from under the bridge to about 1/2 way to the dam.

Anyone care to guess where they think the den may be?
I can't find it.

Also there is no feed pile.

that is very puzzling, i don't have enough experience to make a very good educated guess, but i would expect to see one in the bank where you have the blue.  is there fresh sign in the area that shows there still around, maybe they moved on somewhere else.

Plenty of sign.
The only problem with the blue spot is that one side is deep enough for sure, the other side is way too shallow, is that there is barriers to tunneling because of the "wing" from the bridge. For them to tunnel to the area behind the wall the long way would require that they tunnel really shallow where there have been a few vehicles driving. Nothing fell through.

If It was a simple matter of pulling the dam out, the land owner would rip it out while I held my beaver colony trap over the den hole and he would tear a hole in through the den. The problem is that the water is at least 10 feet deep without the dam.
