Someone Reccomend a Pistol Barrel for my Encore
« on: December 01, 2004, 12:07:53 PM »
Can someone recommend a caliber for my Encore in a pistol barrel. I want a caliber to deer hunt with and shoot some targets. I will probably be purchasing a 15" heavy barrel from one of the shops. I will be using a scope on it. I don't like the look of the screw holes in barrel after you remove the iron sights.  I have experience with handguns but would prefer a round that didn't try to rip the gun out of your hand. I would also like it in something that is, well, just a little different from what everyone else might be using  .  Most of my deer hunting is from stands and the shots are around 150 yards or less.
I REALLY appreciate all the advise that I have gotten from these forums and value any input that is offered.

BKS,
To go to something odd would require a wildcat (sky is the limit).  Some cartridge that would work well at the 250 Sav., 6mmBR, 243 Win., 260 Rem., 7mm-08.  You could also improve any of those if you want different.

25-08 or a 25 souper pooper. I don't have one but I think it would be something no one would have.  accurate(308family) and just right for deer/varmint.  BRU

well.....i like a 7-08, and think it is nearly perfect. recoil is very tolerable after you get used to it a little.

.......but i'll try to name just a few different possibilities. although they may be custom shop, or total custom options.

.284 win
30-40Ackley Improved
6.5-284
300 savage
260 rem
303 british

.......those would be a little off the beaten path, but still be very effective. probably a lot more that i just can't think of at the moment

  yep.......and the 300 win mag is a heck of a deer slayer in a encore pistol. but, now i wouldn't recommend it unless ya get a good OTT screw on muzzle brake  . it sure tamed mine, and will likely see lot's of woods time. even with it's 18.5" barrel length(including brake), i am surprised at how well it handles. 8)

the 6BR, or maybe even a 6BRX(improved but uses same dies) would be my #1 pick for a target round. if i wanted.....i could take my deer with one every year from now on. it is on the borderline/small side but would do fine with the right bullet in the right place.

......and if we was talkin contender...........i'd sure have to say the 30-30AI.

lotsa options....lotsa options............too many to say one is best.

BKS - you really couldn't go wrong with the .30-30AI. The parent cartridge is not all that expensive, and shoots well out of the AI chamber. There is your practice rounds, building up a supply for reloading. And either cartridge will be a good choice for the range you indicate, and it will help your personal acuracy if you use the same barrel in paracticing to also hunt. So if you spend the money to get a good bull or heavy hunter barrel, you will have fun plinking and be deadly when it comes time for that.

Just shot my first pistol deer this year with a 16 1/4 inch 308 winchester barrel from Virgin Valley.  3x4 Mulie at farther than I want to admit. 308 worked great and east to handle without a brake.

If your looking for a handgun chambering the .357 max. is a good one, took a deer with one today and it will shoot point blank to 150 if sighted properly.

I shoot an Encore in 308 and the recoil isn't as bad as people think.  I shoot 150gr Hornady SST bullets over 43.5gr H4895.  I get 1/4" groups at 75yds.  The load is at the lower end of the manual but it gave me the best accuracy.  I shot almost 50 rounds getting the powder charge right and happy to say my hands didn't know I shot that many.  Other calibers to consider are the JDJ's, I've never shot them but here they are made for handgun shooters.
