Winchester 1894
« on: January 28, 2003, 07:41:31 AM »
I'm kicking around the idea of CAS. My question is: Is a Winchester model 1894 rifle with a 26" barrel,  caliber 32 Winchester Special, allowed for use? I would be using a 165 cast bullet, MV of my load is around 1100 fps. I already have this rifle along with an H&R Trapdoor LBH 45-70 and a Winchester '97 shotgun. I was hoping I could use the above weapons, and only have to pick up a couple of SA revolvers of some kind. I know it is an advantage to use the same ammo in both rifle and handgun, but is it mandatory. Thanks, Greg

Win71, the main match rifle has to be of pistol cartridge.  That 94 would be good for long range side matches only,  Most CAS rifle targets are only 20-40 yards at a lot of clubs, with 50-100 yards on very rare occasions.

Win71, I have about 4 hours more experience in CAS than you do, so take what I say for what it's worth.  But the way I understand it, the only way you'd be able to use those rifles is for long range rifle side matches, and apparently not every CAS event has long range rifle side matches.

As I understand it, the 4 basic lead launchers that you need to compete in CAS are 2 single action revolvers (with about 32 sub classes    ), a pistol caliber rifle or carbine (.32/20, .357, .44/40, .44 Mag, .45 Colt, etc...), and either a side x side shotgun without ejectors or an external hammer pump or lever shotgun.  So you're all set with the scattergun, but you'd still need to beg, borrow, or steal a pistol caliber rifle and a couple of six shooters.

If you read over the old threads here, you can pick up a lot of good info.  Good luck and shoot straight.

My experience plus a lot of the other shooters here and over at the SASS forums is that there will always be shooters that will be willing to lend you the necessary guns for your match.  So show up with what you have and plan to enjoy one of the best times in your life.

Thank you for the info. I guess I have an excuse to buy another rifle too. I'll check out the auction sites and gunshows for a Winchester '92, 44-40 along with a couple of revolvers in the same cartridge. Thanks again!
