REDUCED LOADS FOR 22-250
« on: November 19, 2004, 06:13:06 AM »
HELLO EVERYONE THIS IS MY FIRST POST ON GRAYBEARD

I need some information on reduced loads for 22-250. I am currently considering 14.0 grs of Blue Dot? If anyone has advice I would deeply
appreciate your input!

I don't have any reloading manuals handy, since I'm at work, but I bet you could find some data online.  Your Blue Dot load sounds about right as far as a reduced velocity would indicate, but I have no way to verify it.  Gunwriter/experimenter/gunfanatic C.E. Harris wrote an article years ago about a general purpose light load he used in dozens of different cases, i.e., 257, 308, 243, 7mm, etc.  He called it, "The Load", and it was something like twelve grains of Red Dot with any bullet weight normally used in the caliber.  I guess he used most of them for plinking and small game loads, sounds like something fun to try.  Hope this helps.

Welcome to Graybeard  :D

The 40 through 50 grain bullets seem to be quite popular in this caliber and my starting loads are still showing anywhere from 3,182 to 3,700fps using seven diff powders & the jacketed bullet.

My Cast data is interesting with the 45 or 50gr bullet and 7 to 9.5gr of Red dot for velocities ranging from 1,800 to 2,300.
Never messed with these as I figured I could always grab the .22WMR instead of possibly leading my bore with a poor bullet fit.
Is still interesting. Let us know what you end up with. :D

4759                        9.5       1656

50 grain spitz-sp

4759                          11           1688

At low velocity you might try some Hornet bullets. The hollow points might not open up.
If you do get a reduced load that works get let me know.
Im thinking of working one up myself to fill the gap I have from my 22lr to my 22-250.

I purchased a Savage 17HMR and have had a whale of a time with it for varmints up to and not including coyotes.  If you practice it is quite accurate up to 200 yards.  A couple of bullet choices and I have a great gun to match my Centrfire.  One to shoot, one to cool!  This 17hmr is not your daddies 22 it's accurate and has some bite to it!  By the way the gun and a resonable rimfire scope and I have $ 300 in the package.  Buckfever

Alliant Reply to my question

THANK YOU ALL FOR THE WARM WELCOME HELPFUL INFO.

Well I sent an email to Alliant Powder attached is their reply

"I am sorry, but we do not have any such data. I have heard of using Blue Dot for reduced 223 loads, but never for the 22-250. It sounds potentially very dangerous."

So now I am confused, ANY HELP OR INPUT AVAILABLE

Blue Dot is not really a powder of choice for the .22-250.

If I knew what bullet weight you were planning on using I could be of more help.  SR-4759 is the acceptable powder for reduced loads.

I tried some loads ( 243 win) with H4895. Hodgdon says you can reduce a published load using that powder to 60% of max.  For the most part it was a failure (really bad accuracy)but I never got above 70% of max. Hodgdons youth loads look to be around 75% maybe thats some sort of magic number.

Reduced loads seem to be some sort of black art and there are loads out there that work but it seems to me they are with cases that have a lower capacity/bore ratio.

I have to throw my hat in with the 17hmr and I have. Mine is the Marlin 917 it's great I would use it where I would not even use a 22 (for fear of ricochets).

I guess it depends what your looking for if you want to make the 22-250 more pelt friendly it's probably a lost cause. If your trying to make it more neighbor friendly the 17hmr is the way to go.
