powder question
« on: November 29, 2004, 10:17:06 AM »
I shoot mostly T7 loose powder in my huntsman. I usually load 80-85 grs. because it has been reccomended to use 15% less than a 100 gr. Bp max. The other day when I was putting more powder in the flask, I noticed several load combos on the 1lb. container that had 100 grs. of triple 7 ffg in the load, the only difference being, they called for a no. 11 cap. Are there bullets, along with 209 primers and 100grs. of triple 7 ffg loose, that would be safe in the Huntsman?

laker 252,
Sorry, I had a much more through answer to give you about all this Triple 7 issue but just checkout PrecisionRifle.coms site @ http://www.prbullet.com/.  Spend some time looking into modified breech plugs that do away with 209 primers.....  Any questions, Cecil would be happy to talk to you on his 800 line to straighten out all your concerns.

Also, look up the Hodgden Powder Site and contact their customer service regarding maximum powder charges with Triple7.

Laker252,

I am getting the impression that you are only concerned about getting the safe maximum amount of powder for your load combo when you should really be looking for shot group accuracy, I use a 460gr. no excuse bullet with 60gr. of triple 7, my groups at 100 meters are touching, with 70gr. of powder my group size goes to 3 inches, with 80gr. my groups jump to 5 inches. With 295 to 300gr. bullets  and 80gr. of triple 7, I can get the same accuracy as with the 460gr. bullet, so as you can see from my examples, the question of max charge, is really of no concern. 8)

Laker252,

Yes, last year during BP season I dumped a doe about 75 to 80 yards out, she never took a step, just dropped. The exit wound was about the size of a golf ball.
