22 Hornet looking REAL good
« on: December 06, 2004, 12:15:17 AM »
I think for CHRISTmas I'm going to get myself a 22 hornet. Been looking at them for a while. I know the cartridges for them are a little pricey, but I think I need one. This all started a little over a year ago. Ever since then, can't shake the disease! :-D  Hoping that BPS will get some in before CHRISTmas . If they don't, I guess BPS in Nashville will have to suffice :toast:  Now I think I going to need a scope, But will 3-9x40 be plenty? And I'm going to get a scope that isn't to pricey either. And what kind of scope rings will work best? Any suggestions ? A tasco or simmons is what I was thinking about

Tommy - The Sportsman's guide is running a Tasco World Class 5-20x50 AO for $89.97 that should be all the scope you would ever need for that Hornet. Great varmint scope. Oughta hold up well under the light recoil of the 22 round too.

As far as rings go, Mac11700 recommended the Leupold Rifleman #55870 to me a long time ago and I have three sets now and have used nothing else on my Handis. They are high enough to save you from using the hammer spur if ya want and are low enough to still give comfortable target aquisition. Strong aluminum two-piece rings. They work well on both the standard and monte stocks, have a set on my 7x64B (Monte Carlo) and my Huntsman (standard). Perfect for the H&R/NEF rails.

Go to James Calhoon's Bullet webpage and just make gopher loads for your 223. That way you have two guns for the price of one.

I really enjoy my hornet I have a Simmons atec on it they are not expensive and work very well, One thing I did was take a couple of shell and drill the primer pockets out so a 209 primer would fit, then I load .22 cal pellets in it( this can all be done by hand no press.) its accurate to at least 75yrds and will punch a hole in a 1" pine plank at 25 really dose the job on squirrel to. 8)

Im not trying to hijack your thread, but have you tried to make gopher loads for you 223?  I have seen a lot of different reduced loads in reloading manuals. But I have never heard of anyone shooting them.

2 maybe 3 things,
Tommy,  Take a look at the Simmons ATV, a 4.5-14x40.  One of the best in the under $100 price range IMHO.  I think Natchezss may still have some.  Also, have you thought about the 17HMR instead of the Hornet.  Just about the same performance with out having to handload.  Clumsey as I am, I think I would probably drop about half the Hornet cases I tried to reload.
And I forgot who was shooting the 22 cal. pellets.  I have tried this also with just a regular primer and no powder in both my 223 and 22-250.  They really come out fast, but have trouble keeping the pellet in the neck.  Are you doing something to the neck to keep them seated.

Are the psp rem coreloks more accurate say than the win hollow pts? I know in my rem 511 ( old bolt action 22) the sp's are more accurate than the hollow pts. I used to like hollow pts in years past, but to me they're not as accurate as the sp.

Hellacatcher,
What kind of scope do you have on your hornet? I've got to put some money away for the scope or look for sales I guess. I remember years ago me and Papa Henson used to always look at different guns and different and the muzzle velocity  when I was a a little whipper- snapper.
He really liked the hornet too.  :sniper:  What I wouldn't give to go back some years you know! Got to be discreet about this purchase. Hopefully I can get one before I come home. :toast:

Hey Donaldo... I don't do anything to the neck I just stick'em in, They wouldn't work with my friends .22-250 nor my .223, just fall out of the case. I believe hornet necks are tighter because older model hornets where .223 dia not .224 like newer ones and I doubt they have changed the cases. BTW I'm getting 900fps+ with the 209 primers. 8)
