Just bought my first NEF
« on: November 18, 2004, 01:03:18 PM »
I just bought a new NEF Handi-Rifle 30.06 Springfield mounted with a Simmons Pro 50 2.5-10X50 scope today. This is the first single shot rifle, heck first rifle for that matter, that I have bought. I have just moved to a state that has a rifle season for deer from one that was slug only. I was just wondering what I can expect? Does anyone have any advice on bullet grain, manufacturer, etc. I'm very excited about the purchase as I have heard mostly good things about this rifle. I know its a good sign when I order it and the owner of the gun shop tells me he owns one and  loves it. Any help/advice/warnings would be appreciated.

Ain't you one of the smart ones!  Good luck.

I think that the main thing is to make certain that you clean that barrel super good before you ever shoot it and you'll never go wrong.

With that done you should get out to the range and shoot 50 rounds in an afternoon while taking care to not over heat the barrel.

amac42;
Welcome to the forum!!!
You bought a great gun in a greater caliiber.
my advise would be to try several different loads to find what your gun groups best with.
As factory loads go....my handi 06 loves remington core-lokt PSP in 150 grain.but it will shoot good groups in anything i feed it in the 150-165 grain bullets.

As hand loads go.....I have had really good luck loading 150gr Speer hotcore bullets over 56.5 grains IMR 4350.

As cowboyace said be careful not to overheat the barrel at the range
these handi's are a bit heat sensitive and if you get them too hot they will start to vertically string groups.

good luck!.....let us know how it shoots.

filings and junk around the locking lug. some times this can give trouble locking up. in other word clean real good. Sourdough just wrote he

:D , Welcome aboard amac42, glad to have you around. Watch out and take care for you too might become a "Handi-holic"!!!!....<><.... :grin:

That said, be on the lookout for a nice shotgun barrel for that frame, perhaps a nice light .410 or a 20? Heck even a 28 gauge would look great on it. Or a nice classic 16 gauge, well, you might as well go for a 12 gauge barrel too, they are pretty cheap used. When you get used to fitting them yourself the real fun begins!!!  If your SUPER lucky you will come across a .357 Mag barrel used, if you do, don't stop to think about it just buy it!!! ....<><....:wink:

Just thought I would let everyone know how it went at the range. First shot out of the box @ 100 yards, darn pumpkin didn't know what hit it. I couldn't group it in for a variety of reasons (weather & very crowded) but I had a blast shooting. It seemed to be very accurate unitl the barrel warmed up a bit and then it started hitting about a foot low. I put about 40 rounds through it with some cheap foreign ammo. Overall I give it an A+, great gun, and I'm looking forward to getting out with it as much as possible. On a lesser note, the deer population in Eastern KY is safe this year as I came up empty this without even taking a shot. Oh well, always next year. Thanks for all the advice.

I was expecting a pretty good kick, as was everyone else who saw it, but was really surprised by the minimal amount of recoil. It was so smooth to shoot. Now I just have to work on not getting hit in the face by the automatic ejection :-) . KY's gun season is from middle of Nov. to the weekend after Thanksgiving (2 weeks I think)
