Your thoughts on Benelli Nova
« on: November 29, 2004, 01:44:10 AM »
I am looking at buying a new shotgun and really wanted a SBE but they are way too much.  I found the Nova for sale for 350.  Much more reasonable.  Is the nova a gun I can beat on and reliable?  I shoot about 2000 rounds a year.

the nova is a fine gun... it's action is similar to the 870 in look and feel and seems to be very reliable.  the gun itself it somewhat funky looking and i prefer something more traditional but from a functional standpoint the nova is very good... i believe the bps is the best mass production shotgun on the market but the nova is a very good gun...

The Nova is a very good shotgun especially as a field gun.  Haven't heard any bad things about it personally.  Do a search on Google for Nova customer satisfaction and that will give you some insights. You say you shoot about 2000 rounds a year.  That's seems a lot shooting for just bird hunting or are you shooting trap also?  If you are shooting trap here are some thoughts about the Nova.  The Nova receiver and stock are a one piece so if you wanted change the stock for trap shooting you can not.  If for some reason the stock gets damaged then you have the replace the whole receiver/stock combination since it is one piece.  Nova's are almost impervious to rust since only the barrel, bolt and a few internal parts are metal, the rest is synthetic.  Great if you hunt in the rain a lot.

I do a lot of trap shooting so I went with the Remington 870.

The nova will kick you harder than a mossberg.  870's are just about the most reliable pumps in the business. The Bps is also good but the barrel rib is a hollow rail and is easy to dent.

BigBuck,

I just purchased a camo Nova just 10 days ago.  Got tired of my buddies taking ducks with their 3 1/2" mags, and my 2 3/4" just not cutting it.  Unfortunately, I too was lacking in the funds department for the Super Black Eagle II, so I got the Nova to fill my needs until more serious funds came in.

Couple of thoughts - hard to beat the price for something that can handle 3 1/2" rounds.  I paid $349 at Sheels sporting goods store in Omaha. That was for the Camo version.  Basic black was much cheaper.

Out in the water, my weapon got more than its share of water.  Once home, the weapon breaks down easier than any other shotgun I own.  The trigger assembly just drops out, taking out the bolt etc was a snap.

Although a significant portion of the weapon is "plastic", I felt it important to give the metal parts a good cleaning.

My impression - a great buy, and a good gun.

for anyone who has just bought a nova, you made a good investment i got mine when they first came out about 4 years ago althought is was 17 then my nova looks like its about 25 years old i think it has 1 to many rides laying open in the bottom of my boat. the only problem i have now is with the ejector on the side out bolt not wanting pull out fired shells . benelli will fix it with a just some shipping charges. but if you keep in a case or just clean it more than once a year i feel assured youll get many years of fail safe service.
