Model 7 queries

I have a Model 7 in 7mm-08 very happy with the rifle on the whole just have a couple of questions about it. The rifle  has a factory barrel pressure point at the front of the fore-end (ie not  free floating). I have noticed when shooting 100 metre groups with the rifle bench rested that two shots tend to group fairly tight but one is often a flier, and is often high. It doesn't seem to matter who shoots it.

I have been told that the barrel needs time to cool between shots as it is light contour, could this be the problem?

Also I have been told that it is important when shooting this rifle when standing that the fore-end must be gripped the same way all the time to ensure accuracy? Can anyone enlighten me on this??

lurcher,
My first impression is that with a light contour barrel, you are heating the barrel and most likely are seeing vertical stringing as a result.  A couple things to check however.  If you will check the action screws directly in front and back of the trigger group for tightness and check in back of the action for evidence of slop between the receiver and stock.  These are the things that epoxy bedding will eliminate.....any possible action movement.  Also, using a dollar bill or business card, pass it between the barrel and forearm stock to make certain you have a forearm that is ONLY touching the barrel at the pressure point and no where else.

Finally, you didn't say if you have a scope or iron sights.  It might help to eliminate the scope and try the iron sights to see if it is still stringing vertically.  Good Luck!

Yup

My mountain rifle and my Model Seven both did the same thing.  As soon as I slowed down and cooled the barrel more between shots the groups tightened up.  Iam not sure about the pressure point though I have never really had to worry how I hold the guns.  I don't recommend getting rid of it though.  I got talked into free floating the barrel and it didn't help at all.  I have since got the pressure point put back and she shoots sweet.
