Another unknown critter sighting last night
« on: February 13, 2005, 04:17:17 AM »
Maybe Matt will drop in and see this and elaborate since it was after all his critter sighting. But in the mean time I'll report it as best as I can.

Last night as Matt turned off the state highway into my driveway he reported seeing a multi-colored/spotted critter run from the neighbor's place across my driveway and into my swamp. He isn't exactly sure what it was. I think he said primary colors were brown, white and black. Much larger than a cat he said and not shaggy. I think the word he used to descrite it was slick. His impression was it might be a hog.

Now I reckon that's possible as hog are spreading all over the place. But if so it's the first hog sighting I'm aware of anywhere near here. Could be someone is raising hogs nearby and I just don't know it. If that's the case one could have escaped. Or they could have just followed the creeks and moved into this area. Dunno. After breakfast I plan to hop on the four wheeler and ride down to take a look. Wanna see if I can tell what sorta tracks are around there. The area he says it crossed my driveway should be pretty much a muddy mess on the swamp side right now. Maybe some decent tracks will be showing.

Hi Graybear :D
Keep us informed. If its headed for the swamps, it should leave some tracks, like you was saying. Hope you have some plaster with you, so you can cast the tracks, incase it turns out to be something else, that is.

Good luck

Wal I rode the four wheeler down and took a look around. Found no tracks of any kind. Since I don't know precisely where it crossed the driveway I didn't know precisely where to look. But in none of the mud down there did I find critter tracks of any sort. I am a bit surprised at that really. As often as dogs come thru I'd at least have expected to have seen dog tracks.

Looked around well enough that if a hog had taken up residence I think I'd have seen some evidence. Nuttin. So the critter Matt sighted remains a mystery. I'm thinking maybe a dog but he just didn't think so.

Yea if a Hog has moved in around there you should be able to find the sign. Look around the edges of the swamp for routed up ground, Torn up rotten logs and things like that. A larger Hog needs a LOT to eat and will have to do a lot of routing to fine it.
