Howdy, Today  I should be picking up a new #1a in 30-06, this will be my 1st modern single shot, I shoot alot of muzzleloaders though, for some time it was all I hunted with. also I shoot pistol caliber leverguns.
The #1 will fill out my modern cowboy arsenal - A win. trapper and a redhawk both in .45lc are the others.
I am going to top off the #1 with a Burris 2x7 compact that I already have.
Does anybody know where I can get a all-leather buttcuff for ammo? And a favorite recipe for small game loads; 30-06?

Hillbilly welcome to the single shot forum. That #1 in 06 should prove to be a winner. Hard to beat the versatility of the combination.
The Handloading for Rifles and Handguns forum will be of help to you in finding reduced loads. You might also try the 06 Accelerators just to see how they do in your barrel. You will be shooting a 55gr. bullet at over 4000 FPS which turns it into a bonified varmit round. I know its not a small game load but might be fun to play with anyway.
There is also a Leather Work forum here that could be of help to you for finding the ammo holder and other Cowboy Shooting accessories. I too have been wanting one for my Browning but have found nothing but the black stretchy type. Let us know what you find out over there and hopefully some of the guys here can be of help to you as well. POW

Not sure if they have them or not, but check Track of the Wolf, and Jeff's Outfitters for the leather. They both have online catalogs.

Just received my own long awaited 1S / 45-70. You just really have to love those #1 sporters!

I've been trying to find a Burris compact myself, but also need a set of rings. Any suggestions?

I use a Burris 1-4x compact with the Leupold/Ruger rings on my #1 RSI in 30-06 - works great!

I used the ruger rings that were shipped with the rifle, I would bet your's will have them to.
I do have the rifle and I love it, I shot it last Fri. I put 20 rds through it, after each shot I ran a brush soaked with Hoppe's #9 followed by couple of dry patches, just shooting off my elbows and alot of time between shots it was shooting .75 to 1" 3 shot groups at 100yds. I'm sure I'll be really pleased when I shoot off a rest to wring out the best groups. I'm very happy with this rifle, the butt stock has some real nice figure, this rifle just fits me like a rifle should.
I do have a Q though, in the horizontal position and I eject the empty cartridge it kicks it back onto the space behind the breech block and not clear of the rifle, if I tighten the screw under the forearm will it kick it clear or is this the best way? I was thinking it would be in the way for a quick reload unless I raise the muzzle.

Do the gurus out there have some tips or links to being a complete rifleman with the #1?

Hillbilly,

I have hunted with No. 1's for mor than 30 years and prefer the 1A's for big game.  I general carry 5 extra rounds on my belt on the right front position.  I have become very familiar with getting an additional round into the chamber from that position by practice.  Not as fast as a bolt, but close when counting between aimed shots.  The secret is to shoot the rifles.  I fired over 6,000 rounds through a .22/250 and have several through the replacements, not counting the big game rounds.  Practice from a situation that can be duplicated when hunting.

Hillbilly,
I too am a new  #1 owner and love mine so far.
I opted for the  1A in 7x57.
Look closely at your ejected empy,I'll bet it's hitting the saftey.
Mine does I found out when I open the action with the saftey on,it ejects clear.
With the saftey on it stops in the channel.
I understand it can be ground down if it bothers you though.
If spring tension is the culprit< yes you just tighten the spring.

Yes a empty will hit the safety and a loaded round clears it, its not a big deal. When I am shooting it from a field position they all cleared the rifle.
I'm having a lot of fun with this rifle.

HG,
Another #1 owner here. My wife just bought me one for Christmas that I had my eye on. Mine is chambered for the 7mm Rem Mag. This isn't my first single shot, I have several from H+R/NEF, my favorite being a H+R Bufallo Classic in 45/70. It wears a stretch nylon cuff, that is very quick to reload from, but I've never needed a second shot. LOL I've grown fond of .284 caliber rifles of late, this will be my third. The other two are a .280 Rem., and a 7mm-08. Enjoy your new rifle!
BTW: I'm also a levergun fan.

I bought one in 22-250 from afella that said after he bought it he found out he didnt like single shots. I told him it didnt matter to me a bout follow up shots cause if i didnt hit what I was shooting at the first time I dang shore wasnt gonna hit it a running. So the the eject dont matter much to me.Only thing I had to do was adjust overall cart lenght brought groups right down to 300 yard jackrabit gun ever time.

I just counted and I have 6 of the #1's...hahaha...love them all..I think though you will find if memory serves me right that the rings no longer come with any of the rifles with open sights, only with the models with out sights..not a biggie though..I have found a few sets on Ebay..I hate to say that because usually that is the most expensive auction site around, but I have bought 4 or 5 sets and most of the standard ones have been under $25 for new or almost new...I have bought several sets of double offset rings for the #1 and paid $30 to $35 new in box for both...I find the double offset is easier than shortening the stock....hahah..have found I have a short neck and most length of pulls are to long to let the scope come where it should for me..also if you are buying the newer guns you will usually find the trigger pull horrible at least mine on my new 280 Rem was..I vowed to never buy a new one again because I was spoiled after having all older rifles with light butter smooth triggers..the I found out about the Moyers trigger..think I got it at Brownells or Midway..had it installed and love it..had the smith set it about 2 1/2 to 2 3/4 pounds and it is now my main gun...but do love my 45-70..hahaa..just my thoughts...WW1
