Has Anyone Heard??????
« on: December 07, 2004, 03:41:08 PM »
A friend of mine knows a Remington employee who told him Remington is coming out with a 209 primer made for inlines that will decrease(or get rid of) the crud ring problem.
I was wondering if anyone heard this "rumor"???

sounds to me like a marketing gimmick. if the powder manufacturer could figure out the chemical reaction that causes the crud ring, they would have capitalized on it a long time ago.

It is possible the they have finally listened to someone and they may be thinking about making a less hot 209 primer. Winchester makes one they call a muzzleloading primer but it is just the same one they make for shotguns and it is just a marketing thing. I asked Thompson Center to pressure the ammo people to make a less powerful 209 for black powder rifles. Maybe they got to someone at Remington. We know that the hotter 209's make the powder crud ring worse (at least with 777 powder). Personally I don't care much anymore as I put the .25ACP conversion on my Omega and then I found Black Mag3 powder so my problems are all gone.

Well here is my two cents...

I am now shooting Remington 209-4's which are no longer made by Remington.  I called a factor tech and he said that the new 209 STS was suppose to be an all-around 209.  He did not say that they were thinking of producing anything new.

Winchester, who ever that is today using Winchester's name, is making a ML 209 primer but they are expensive - to expensive-> someone said $4.00/100

Just as a side note - I shoot a lot of trap and I use a Cheddite 209 primer (they are cheap and laquere sealed), I really do not know where they fit in the heat range thing, but prior to buying a brick of Remington 209-4's last year; that was what I used to shoot my ML's with.  During that time and even now I do not have a problem with the dreaded "crud ring."  When I run out of Rem's I am sure i will be back to shooting Cheddites.
Keep shooting muzzleloaders - they are a blast....

I actually read it in a magazine and can't remember which one.  I have a email into Remington to find out and will post when they reply.  This is a new 209 primer not the 209-4 or the SST . Looks promising though if it works.
