t/c winter project
« on: November 09, 2004, 03:29:18 AM »
I am going to do a winter project this year as soon as the late PA flinter season will be over.I do shoot a t/c hawkens 50 cal. flinter that also has a set of peep sight installed ,this set up means it can not be used in the late season,I do favor the peep over the open sight.
I was lucky to land a kit from a guy that had a early no# kit that must of been made when the first t/c Renegade came out.The kit was assembly the barrel cold blue the stock finished by a guy that spent a lot of hours (he did a nice job ) but it not to my taste.O forgot to mention it is a flinter in 54 cal.
I had it out to the range last week put 25 rounds threw it with 85 grains of goex 3f a wad over the powder and a REAL 380 conical ,printed some nice groups(I should also mention the gun has never been fired).
I would like to add a little color to the stock seem the stock is a good grade of walnut and real dark brown,I would think the gentleman must of refinished the stock with linseed oil and cut the finiished down.
I did use for many years tru-oil for top coat finising ,but just went to FORBBYS TUNG OIL  and really like the stuff,my question is there a product out (stain) that I can use to add a little reddish color to the dark walnut stock, seem I am going to brown all the metal parts also.

You -might-consider using aqua fortis.Try it first on an inconspicious/hidden area.Seems to give some red color to stocks.
You need to wipe it on,then heat the wood over a stove burner.

Laurel Mountain Forge has just what you want, the stains are available from Track of the Wolf, and others that deal in parts and supplies.

There's a military supply place that has what I think your looking for. Email me and tomorro after I return from deer hunting I'll look up the name of the place and email it to you. I've got a bottle in the basement but, it's getting late and I'm up early to go hunting.
