7x57 or 7x57AI on a Mauser action?
« on: November 14, 2004, 01:31:21 PM »
I live in Australia and due to the relative difficulty in buying a new a 7x57 rifle I'm tossing up having a custom rifle built. I'd use a Mauser action, either a 98 or the ones built by CZ which I think are the M48 actions. Having the opportunity to get any round I want chambered I'm tossing up whether I should get the Ackley Improved round as it gives a significant leap in performance compared to the standard Mauser round and the cases are easily formed. Having said this I'm not sure of the availability of the dies. What's the consensus on such a move?

I would go with the AI. It will allow you to still use standard ammunition with decent accuracy and allow you to load the full power of the AI. Dies are available quite easy here, and if needed we can ship them to you if you are unable to find them in Aus.

Might consider a .280 Rem.

kombi,  Given your choices, I think I'd opt for the 7x57AI.
