I took a friend of mine out calling tonight. He's new to calling, so he was kinda mixed between being exited, and sorta doubtful about it being all that eventfull.
We went to a farm he has permission to hunt(virgin calling land), and made our first stand about an hour after dark. Not 5 minutes into the cottontail distress, here comes two sets of eyes across the clearing straight to us. It was two nice greys. I waited for him to shoot, but he wasn't used to night shooting, and couldn't get on target too well. I waited till they started getting skittish, and busted the first one myself.
It didn't take long for him to get his self together, and as I switched off to the grey fox pup, and the other one came back in, he busted it with my Hornet. I was just about to cut off the caller when another big grey flew past us to our left from behind. I kissed real loud, and as he stopped about 35 yards out, I popped him too.
I swept the light around us, and sure enough, about 200 yards out was another set of eyes. I'm not sure it was a fox. It looked bigger, and I'm about certain it was a coyote. I messed with it for a few minutes, but it never came in, and finally left.
We made one more stand in another farm, and called in two more greys, which gave us the slip! That was 6 responces in two stands within an hour. We didn't have time to hunt any more, but man was that an evening! That was one of the best nights I've ever had, as far as exiting!
Old Danny was tore up pretty good, and I'm afraid he's hooked for life on calling predators! LOL!
