.500 handi thoughts...

Icant wait till this big guy comes out. I'm thinking of getting one but am weary. The reason being the cheapest box of ammo you can find id around $30. thats over $1.00 a shot. i will probly reload when i get it anyway but still.  Iam wondering if it will be like the standard handis. or will they make it in an ultra version ect. or maybe evena  buffalo classic style gun.  If'n anyone else has any thoughts they'dlike to add to this, lets hear'em

I only saw one configuration and that was a handi rifle with wood stock.

I doubt if a Buffalo Classic style will exist simply because it's not like it's a copy of a 50-70, instead the .500 S&W is a whole new creation so you may only see it in one barrel length of 22"

I priced reloading the 500 SW based on components and prices listed in natchezss.com.  With decent components i estimated about 90c per load.  i factored in using each case 4 times.  Therefore, this estimate is probably on the high end.  Anyway, 18$ per box is way better than 36$.

My wife will kill me if i buy another gun, but at least when i do i'll have lots of time to work up loads from the 'dog house'.   :)

Yeah I moan and groan when I buy .22 hornet ammo also.It makes me wonder if the bullets are made of solid gold or something. The cheapest I have seen is sellier and bellot at $8.99 for 25 rounds.Every other manufacturer is between $28.00 to $35.00 dollars a box for 50 rounds.

$35 a box. Must be the Winchester Supremes for that price.

I replied to your other thread as well v8r.

I have yet to try them in my Hornet, but if the price is any indication, they should be tack drivers.

i almost bought a .22 hornet handi, but i could not rationalize it when looking at prices for ammo in the .223.  I mean, i love the hornet, but my pocket book loves the .223 more...

These days, any factory load is quite good.  however, prices sometimes are quite high (ie., 22 hornet, 500 s&w, etc.) and it only makes sense to load your own if shooting a lot.

You could buy 2 additoinal handi barrels with the money you might spend on factory loads, in a decent shooting session (100 shots), with the 500 S&W

Looking at the ballistics for this bruiser, anything within 150 yards is toast!   :)

A handi, no pun intended, cartridge to guard oneself against grizzlies while fishing.

SSS,

i was merely looking at factory loads, hornady bullets.  1900 fps and 2805 ft lbs at the muzzle with a 350 gr XTP-MAG.  BUT owee, $54 for a box of 20!!!  (as listed on the hornady site).

Buying cast for it would bring the cost down to mearly aerial. Casting your own would make it no worse than a 45-70, easily inside 15 cents a shot. Seems it would be a decent cast bullet cartridge.

Can a non-crimping die set be used for this round in a rifle?  I guess that depends on the bullet one is using...
