I'm looking at getting a new barrel for my encore. I'm thinking about a
22-250 or 25-06 both in 15" pistol. I don't know if the 25-06 at close range well tear up small varmints and coyotes even with 75grain bullet, or should I go with 22-250 with 45gr to 55gr bullet. The one plus for the
25-06 is that I can use it on deer, the down side is that my son can't shoot it where as the 22-250 he probable can.

Have you considered the 243? It is in between the 2 and could be used for varments and deer. Just a suggestion.

If you are reloading, go with the 25/06 and forget the comprimise on case size. You can load it down or up depending upon your needs.

I'm setup for reloading for both I just don't know which one would be good out of a 15" barrel.

the 25-06 holds a lot of powder that might not get burned in a 15" barrel. depending on your state regs and the correct bullet,the 22-250 can take deer to a limited range. there are better choices available and youNEED a new barrel anyway :wink:

I have both the 22-250 and 30/06 in 15" Encore barrels. Neither has any trouble burning the powder or performing. From what you are asking, the 25/06 should fit right in the middle of that bracket. Nothing says you have to shoot it at maximum all the time.

I came upon the same situation at the beginning of the year with a .223 and 25-06, both in 26 inch rifle barrels. I went with the 25-06 and OH BOY was it a varmint nightmare. With 49.5 gr of IMR4064 and 75 gr Hornady V-Max bullets, every prairie dog I hit this year went at least 4 feet in some direction, some in many directions. :shock:

I would not call the VMaxs out of a quarter bore fur friendly, but they are fun. :grin:

The 25 has more versatility as a dual purpose than the 22-250. If you braked the 25-06 your boy should be able to shoot it without a problem.
It all depends on what primary purpose you want it for. the 25 will tear up fur more over the 22-250. Get a 17 Rem., 17 Mach IV, 20 BR or 20 PPC for fur & a 6.5-284, 260 rem., 250 Sav, 250 Sav AI, 25-06, 284 or 243 AI for deer sized game. Some of these cartridges also work good for elk.

Well I decided on the 22-250 first in a couple months I'll probably get a 270 barrel might even get it in a rifle barrel instead of pistol. Next ? well the 22-250 in a 15" be good enough for coyotes out to 300+ yards? Or should I get a rifle barrel I really like shooting the pistol with my 44mag 15" barrel. And should I get a EABCO barrel or are the Thompson barrel accurate enough for long shooting, how long does it take to get a barrel from eabco?
