Best rimmed case for new line of wildcats??
« on: April 15, 2005, 04:14:44 AM »
I've been throwing around the idea of making a few wildcats for personal use, then maybe "release" them upon the rest of the world.

I'd like a large capacity rimmed case with the following criteria:

1.  70gr powder capacity
2.  can be necked up to 50cal
3.  necked down to 17cal
4.  strong enough to handle 65000cup +/-(not quite a necessity, but like it)
5.  large rifle primer
6.  longer length to allow room for trimming to desired specs.

Any suggestions?

Sounds like 50 Alaskan, 50-90 Sharps or 50-110 Winchester.  All from Starline.  Limits options on repeating actions though, especially if thinking of 65,000psi.

Thank you.

If/when I do build something, a custom barrel and action will be in the works.  I doubt I'll try something with that much pressure, but would like to not have to worry if I get up in the 50K+ area.

If you would like any help or direction feel free to give me a buzz or e-mail. I've helped quite a few folks out on designs and really enjoy it. No charge or anything like that.

Thank you for the offer, I'll be sure to send you an email someday when I get the ambition to follow through with this.

update.  I think I'm gonna use the 45-70 casing as a base of wildcat.  plenty around for future usage.

The NEF/H&R rifle will be my test bed too.  The SB2 receiver can handle 65K pressures from the .270 and other hi-velocity rounds and is quite inexpensive just incase I do FUBAR something.

I've been tinkering with the idea of a really short and stubby  .17 and .20cal on a 45-70 shell.  ...shortening it to about 1 inch, then necking it down.   Not sure on the shoulder angle I wanna use yet.

For something like that you might as well use a .45 Colt case it will save on the cutting

yeah.  good idea.  I'll keep that in mind.

I figure the barreling will be fairly easy.  I can use either a 45-70 or 45LC(depending which way I go) lug and extractor mated to a 17 or 20cal barrel that has been rechambered.  Barrels will be easy and cheap to come by with NEF's barrel program(god bless them). :)

I'm gonna study up on some factory and wildcat rounds this week, then startup my CAD program to toy around with some case design.

one question,

when necking down from say a .45cal case to 17-24 calibers, how do you avoid mouth crimping like at the end of a 22rf blank or shot shell?

like shown here:

Those crimps are all made using a special crimping die, necking down does not automatically do that.
Now you are going to have some serious case loss going down to a .17 or .20 cal but in wildcat development, that is just part of the process. The best way to avoid it is the neck down in steps and anneal the brass every few passes.

Sounds like 348 Win to me. Maybe lacking the capacity, but should work for everything else.
