How in the world does the darn thing come off? There is one screw in the barrel band. Does the sling stud have to be removed? Also, I'm trying to get the magazine spring and follower out, but the tube doesn't move near as easy as on a 336 with the tube that goes out to the end of the barrel. Any trick for moving the tube out enough so the spring can be removed? I'm thinking if the forearm were to be removed the magazine tube would be easier to move. Thanks, VC

There are a couple of models of 1895 including an original.. I refer here to the newer versions..with the round bolt. The magazine plug is held in the magazine tube by a screw that enters from the bottom in the front of the magazine tube. Remeove the screw and restrain the plug as it is under spring tension! The follower and mnagazine spring will come out the end of the magazine tube once the plug and it's retaining screw are removed. The forearm cap is reteined by 2 screws, one entering from each side of the forearm cap. They thread into a tennon that fits into the gap between the magazine tube and the barrel. The sling stud Does NOT have to be removed. Magazine spring removal is the same for the 336 and all the modern Marlin centerfires...The cap removal does vary a bit in some models...not the 1895's.

Thanks again Gunnut......I bought Larry Crows "The complete Marlin Rifle, disassembly and reassembly" but he didn't mention the forearm, and on the 1895 it looks like the forearm has to come loose to remove the magazine tube. Took it apart and put it back together again twice.....another few times and I'm ready to turn the lights off and try it in the dark......or with a blind fold.....I'm still thinking about how to reduce the trigger pull......again...U DAH Man....thanks!

Thanks. I have been lusting after an 1895 or at least a 45-70 for several years. Can't make up my mind as to what I want! Most likely a Marlin (hate the push button safety) or a winchester 86 light(or ultra light) but I hate the safety therre too! Maybe a 1885? ? ? Oh well one day I'll decide. Too many irons in the fire right now. good luck with the big marlin!
