This years turkey season was the hardest one I've ever had. I sat in misquito infested woods, I got soaking wet in two different thunderstorms, and I probably hiked over 20 miles this season. Not only was it hard hunting but when I did have a chance it seemed like I would screw it up. Either I moved to early or made the wrong call or over slept. In the end it all worked out though.

The second to the last day of the season I got in the woods nice and early and set close to a tom I had roosted the night before. I was sitting along the outside edge of some woods next to a recently plowed field. There were about 70 yards of woods between me and that tom and then a 20 or 30 foot bluff on the other side of him. He started gobbling right of the bat. Non stop. I was sure he was going to come right to, but then I heard him fly down the bluff, instead of staying on top with me. I called for about twenty minutes but he wasn't coming back up he just stayed below gobbling away. So I decided to go after him. I quietly made my way to the bluff, climbed the a verticle wall of rocks, and when I got to the bottem I let out a couple of clucks and yelps. He gobbled but he had flown back on top of the bluff while I was climbing down. So I climbed back up and as my head peaked over the edge there he was not ten feet from me. He made a crazy sounding cackle and took off. I made my way back to my origanal spot and started making very quite puts and purrs. It only took about five minutes and that dumb turkey walked right to me. It was all over for him. One shot from my Benelli Nova with a 3 1/2 #4 hevishot and he went down.

I have to say this was a very hard seaon for me but it has been the most rewarding. I really had to work for this bird and I enjoyed every second of it.
