problem with neck expansion
« on: December 20, 2004, 03:41:42 PM »
UHOH.

here's the skinny:

HARD neck expansion.  so hard it  pulled the expander rod out.

situation(s)

Die: Lee.  adjusted in press per factory specs. touch holder, 1/4 turn more.

Caliber 25-06.  Case: Winchester

In this evenings reloading session:

NEW Brass  = OK. I first sized new brass. no problems at all.

Once Fired brass  NO.
Outside is lube, shoulder has no lube externally.  Neck inside brushed

It Sizes on the Case UP into Die  ok, can pull case Down easily until expander starts back into neck, then it gets STCUCK or NEARLY STUCK.

has this happened to you ? and why ??

Since the rod did pull out on one case, after removing it (by using pliers to nibble at neck)
I used 3M pad and 600 grit paper to clean it up nice and pretty.
no real help, still behaved the same way.

I dont have any setup to check if the rod is bent a small amount, visibly it seems ok.

thanks!

Try lubing the inside of the case necks with a dry lube. Motor Mica or powdered graphite are the usual ones. They are both very mildly abrasive and will polish your expander over time as well as lubing passage now. Some of the spray lubes have enough creep to them so you don't need to do this.

I did once run into a Lee expander with sharp edge at the top. I chucked it into a drill and put a taper there with auto body paper backed by a file.

A little powdered roisin on the stem where it goes through to collet will help with the pullout problem. You really have to bear down on the wrenches to get that collet tight enough.

Lube the inside of case necks. Most reloading manuals recommend lubing one in five. I lube most all of mine. Heck you've got lube on outside of case that has to come off anyway. I then dump my cases in a spare tumbler with corn cob media to get all the lube off both inside and outside. If I don't do it this way I often get the same problem you're experiencing.
