What are your early thoughts on Winchester's latest short mag.
Paper specs look very nice.
Not going to replace my .338 anytime soon but nice for someone that doesn't have one yet.

tbmaker- is this a new bullet or just a new designation? Is this a .323 or .325 bore? Is this actually just an 8mm in the WSM or a new development altogether? Thanks. Mikey.

Yep. Just a 8mm short mag. Actual bullet is .323.
180gr. BT at 3060 fps and 3743 foot pounds
200gr AccuBond at 2950 fps and 3866 foot pounds
220gr Power Point at 2840 fps and 3941 foot pounds.

My guess is Winchester didn't want to jinx it by calling it the 8mm WSM. Remember the poor luck Remington had with their 8mm Remington Magnum? :cry: The .325 WSM does look good on paper and I know of two guys that have ordered one each from our local liars hangout. Seeing both guys are members of our gun club I intend to be there when they do some shooting and check out the .325 WSM for myself. Lawdog

The 8mm Rem Magnum was not killed by the name, but rather, as much as anything else, by the fact that no premium .323" (8mm) bullets were available. Now we have Nosler Partitions (200 gr.), Swift A-Frames (200 & 220 grains) and Barnes X bullets, (180, 200 & 220 grains). There are others such as Woodleigh and Hawk, as well.

Pesonally I don't see the .325 Win Short Mag as a sufficient impreovement over the .300 WSM, but it does have a larger bore, heavier bullets and it will be superior on larger mammals such as elk and moose. The availablility of decent bullets will contribute materially to this cartridge's success, if it is to enjoy success.

The 8mm Rem Mag is also a magnum length action cartridge and that combined with the lack of US-made premium bullets sealed it's fate. But the .325 WSM looks good, if for no other reason than the fact it'll mean more top class bullets are developed for 8mm. Then I can load them in my 8x57 :grin: :wink:
