Buying some barrels need some suggestions
« on: December 10, 2004, 07:57:24 AM »
I currently have a .243 handi and I want to buy two new barrels for it.  I am definately getting the rifled 20 gague as one of them and then I don't know what else to get.  I already have a 7mm-08 in an A bolt II so I was considering a 45-70 or a .450 just to be different.  You don't see too many of them in the woods of PA.  Then I started thinking about a 30-06 or a .280 or possibly a .308.  I never owned a 30-06 but it would be a very versatile gun.  Then I started thinking about a smaller caliber like a 22-250 or the .204.  There are just too many options I guess I will have to buy one of each.  Seriously though I would appreciate some opinions as to which of these calibers you have had good experiences with from a handi accuracy and reliability wise.  I think I am really interrested in the 30-06, .280, and one of the big bored 45's.  It will be used for range shooting, ground hogs and also whitetails.  Thanks for all of the great info here.      Andrew

Well since the .243 will do both ground hogs and Whitetails if you use the right ammo, I would go for the .45-70.

my persoanl preferance i would get

1) 45-70

2) 30-06

3) 308

you can varmit hunt with the 30-06 or .308 if you like if you buy the accelerators. or you can get the heavier bullets to drop anything up to elk or moose sized. the 45-70 is mainly a deer, bear, moose, elk type of gun. you shoot a cyote with a 45-70 you will tear him in two   . but thats just what i would get. all depends on what you plan on  using it for, varmints? preadators? big game?

The 45-70 is extreamly good choice...but so too are your other mentioned calibers...I've had real good luck with the 308 bull barrels...and the standard 308 barrels, just ordered another bull barrel 308...and now I've got a really great 25-06...so...you basiclly need to deceide on which caliber to choose from...you've already got the 7mm's covered with your a-bolt...although the 26" 280 barrel would be very nice...and will be my next purchase to go along with my 26" 25-06...soooo you have  a bunch to choose from.....I'd probably go for a bull barreled 308 or 223...or both...since you want to do some range work with it...both can take whitetails although you range limited with the 223...and the 308 does really good on all your other duties for it...and you can get some outstanding match ammo for it too...as far as the slug barrel...for myself...a hands down favorite of mine is the Ultra Slug Hunter in 12 gauge...I haven't owned any slug gun that is more accurate...so...I wouldn't have a 20 gauge fitted..again...this is strictly my opinion mind you...lots of folks really love their 20 gauges...

Do you handload? A 30-30 could make an interesting option if you handload, the 45-70 is always interesting, handloaded it is possible to do anything from 45 ACP to all your shoulder can take. The 30-06 can do everything from 30 carbine to stepping on the heels of the 300 Win Mag. A lot of good bullets are made for the 30 caliber. If you have the 7-08, I see no point in the 308, but he 280 would give you  few hundred feet per second, if that's actually usable is another question. The 357 or 44 Mag barrel could  give you some short range plinking options.

Perhaps a better place to start is with the question, What performance do I want my basic battery? I plink with cast bullets, and shoot whitetail deer that are dumb enough to stand there and let me. (If Darwin is right, one day I will not see any more deer  )

My battery is 4 rifles that effectively mimmick one another, with one exception. I have a 30-30, a 357 Max, a 44 Magnum and a 45-70. the 30-30 and the Max a virtual ballistic twins, though with the 30-30 there is a greater selection of higher BC bullets that extend the point blank ranges by 50 yards or so, still they are 150 yard rifles for practical purposes. The 45-70 does well in this same range, but with heavier bullets, but if any of those darned Cape Buffalo ever escape Africa and invade our shores, well let me tell you buddy I'm ready.  :-D Finally my 44 is a 150 deer rifle. So with four ways of getting there, I'm gonna add a fifth, a 38-55. Same song, another verse. My battery has nothing to do with logic, and I don't think any other shooters does either. But asking the question gives us the chance to justify yet another firearm. So I think you should purchase not 2 but three barrels, two you want and one for the fun of it. I bet the third becoms the on you shoot most.

The pistol cartriges are just a hoot to shoot and don't cost much, the .45-70 is a woods hammer, You already have a couple of hotrods, get a cruzer with a heavy chassis.     .45-70 8)

I would go with the 45-70, I reload mine with cast lead bullets and it has been loads of fun.  :-D

i'd go for the 308.  inherently accurate cartridge, and lots of bullet weights to pick from (and little less recoil than the 06).  I've got both the 308 and 06 and i prefer the former caliber.  Just to be different, i recommend you wait for the .500 sw barrels (instead of 45/70) to be available.  this handgun cartridge would put a neat twist on your stable of barrels, and have almost the same great performance as the 45/70.  DEFINITELY RELOAD FOR THE .500 SW.  Shooting factory loads will put one in the poor house.
