.25 acp......what primer?
« on: December 13, 2004, 03:24:38 PM »
Just wondering what primer is working the best for you guys. I see Precision Rifle recommends the CCI400 as thier best grouping primer. Has anyone else found that magic primer??? Just getting started and looking forward to the fun.

The 25acp is not worth reloading for several reasons, one you can't get it right, two it is not worth it.As small as it is it won't crimp right.

The post was for the conversion in an Encore 209x50 black powder rifle. It replaces the 209 primer.

I was using Winchester standard small rifle primers because I had a lot of them. They seemed to work well but I have not done much development other than rifle primers are a lot better than 209 primers for most of the powder I shoot. Absolutely necessary for 777, better than 209 for American Pioneer Powder or Black Mag3 and not noticable difference for Pyrodex. Much more work to be done. I think the previous post misunderstood the question.

I have only tried the CCI400 and they work great for me. I did not need to try anything else. 1 to 1 1/2 inch groups at 100 yards. Works for me.  :D

I just picked up a 25 ACP conversion but I have not tried it yet. I too will be using CCI400 as I have about 500 of them.

What powder are you using? If 777 did it help with the "Crud Ring"? I like the way 777 shoots, but loading a second shot becomes a challange, and the third is impossible without swabbing the bore.

Our late M/L season ends here next Wednesday. After that I'll have time to expiriment. This year I bought a pound of American Pioneer Powder. Using Win 209 primer and a 235gr. QT40 I had pretty good results. I really don't want to give up on 777 yet. I'm hoping the 25 ACP conversion helps eliminate the 777 issues.

Thanks

str8shooter48, I am still using triple7. I am using Precision Rifles 195 gr. DC sabots and able to load up to 3 or 4 shots before the barrel gets dirty enough that is make it a little harder to load. But I am able with a little effort to load more than 4 shots. I have a little crud ring after shooting 3 to 4 shots in a row without using a spit patch between shots. But nothing like what I was getting with one shot of triple7 and 209 primers. I was not able to load the second shot without almost breaking the ram rod.

I'll start with the 400's to get a load worked up then mix in the other primers I have available. I'm curious to check out some CCI small rifle bench rest primers I have along with some others. I'm going to be using 777 and some precision Rifle bullets. I have a small variety to try out but I'm really hoping the 195gr duplex bullets shoot as good as I've been hearing. Right now I have an Encore 209x50 with the QLA removed and the .25acp breech plug. I'd like to get the trigger worked and a hinge pin yet. I'm sure it'll shoot better than I can. Thanks for the help and suggestions.

Redhawk. Thanks for the imput on the conversion and 777. I'm glad to hear it was positive experience. I'll give the conversion and 777 a try after the season.

Thanks
