Any of you heavyleader's watch the cannon and mortar shoot on the History channel tonight?  The black powder boy's out-shot the modern cannon boy's at 1000 yd.  Hope they run this one again.  Had some big mortar's lobbing them in at 800 yd's.

Mr. Stuffy, thanks for the heads up on that History channel cannon stuff.
I missed it as my Mrs. had use of the computer last night and this morning is the first time that I've had access to it.  Had I known ahead of time, I'd sure would have watched and recorded it.  If you hear of any more like that or a repeat of that show, please let me know.  Any chance of your attending the Tulsa BIG show this Spring??  I'm still waiting for you to get tired of that old worn out mortar   I just picked up a Browning 1885 BPCR so now I have another way to burn up some more of my black powder. Hey Stuffy,

I saw it! Pleasant surprise... I was just flipping through the channels and it was just starting. Very interesting. That Parrot rifled cannon kicked butt on that french made cannon. Also, I am positive they said the 5 yrd old artillery  piece those Canadian servicemen were using had laser sights and laser  range finding and they still could'nt hit the target  :) See what happens when people get too dependant on electronic "bells and whistles"

Simple is better sometimes. I just wish they showed more of the siege mortars.

I recommend everyone see this show. Luckily History Channel shows are repeated very often.

Regards,
Dave

YES! Great program. I caught the last ten minutes of it in the early evening and had to stay up 'till midnight to watch the whole program.

For those who missed it or don't have access to the History Channel, this is the big annual shoot in WI. Matt Switlick put the thing together some years ago.

Gun classes are: Rifled field gun, smooth bore guns, mountain guns, and mortars. (Did I miss any?) Rifled gun shot at 4X8 sheets of plywood at 1,000 yards.

The second day was the top five guns shoot off. The rifled guns shot at a single sheet of newspaper at 1,000 yards, five shots each. I don't know if I can even see a sheet of newspaper at 1,000 yards.

The top place winner then shot against the Canadian Army team. The results, 3" ordnance rifle 4 hits, LG1 105 mm 0 hits.

Some of the demonstration shots with with canister and bar shot were interesting also. The Canucks eliminated an old station wagon with a few rounds of HE from the LG1.

Worth watching when it runs again.

Don't know if I'll make it to Tulsa in the spring yet or not.  One of the guy's that came down with me last spring has a single engine plane, may try to fly down for just one day this time, but won't know until spring get's here.
Still have the mortar, one of our member's has a full size moror he wants to sell, think in the $750,00 range, comes with it's own shooting box, can't remember the bore size offhand, bigger than 4" but smaller than 6" I think.
Let me know if you want to know more about it.

Hey Stuffy/Jim,  yes, please do see if you can get some more information on that mortar.  I'm always interested in them.  If you can just shoot me an e-mail or a PM, that'd be fine.  Also, if you can secure a picture and attach it to an e-mail, that would really be great.  At the last Tulsa Gun Show, I just about sprung for one of the large brass mortars that were  on display again by the Wild Import Company but the price kinda snapped me back into reality but then again, I'd have saved on shipping charges which are pretty steep. Keep warm over there in IA and  have a real  nice holiday. :D

Sent you an email with a picture of the mortor.  Owner's wife said they had it sold twice, but the shipping was way to high, so they backed out.  Might be one of those things you want to come pickup next time you are in the area.

Stuffy, thanks for the information.  Got the e-mails on the mortar and will contact seller.  Don't need to know the exact location of the seller but if you could just tell me about how many miles he is from you and which direction from you, I'll be able to determine if it'd be feasible to make a side trip on our next motor trip back East to COLD Country. Thanks,  Blaster
