Carbine/Rilfe Math
« on: February 02, 2003, 12:41:37 PM »
I'm looking at a Legacy Sports Puma Lever action in  .454.

In the review,  http://www.gunblast.com/Legacy_454.htm  the writer has listed some of his test data.

On his listing for Buffalo bore ammo he cites:
360gr. LFN in .454 @ 1425FPS for handgun and 1785FPS for the test carbine w/20" barrel.

Would there be large increase realized with the 24" rifle over the carbine?

Thank you.

I very much doubt there would be a significant increase in velocity.
Hangun cartridges burn handgun powder ie: fast. Thus the bbl length has less of an effect beyond 20" or so.

Does Buffalo Bore rate their stuff for Puma rifles?

The '92 is a strong little rifle, but I was really surprised when the Puma was chambered for the Casull. Might be worth checking it out with Buffalo Bore.

I like the idea of a lever action in .454 to go with my FA. I don't shoot the full house loads in my handgun all the time, I doupt I would in the puma either. It is nice to klnow I could if the need/oppertunity arose.

If the longer barrell does not offer a substancal improvements, I think I'd opt. for the carbine. I plan to speak with some at Legacy Sports about pressure ratings. I'll share that info.

I look forward to hearing about someone's experiences with this carbine.

See the thread titled "454 lever" on the 4th page of this forum.  The thread also contains a link to a discussion on the Marlin forums.  I too would be interested in hearing more data on this rifle/carbine.  Sounds like fun!   :-)

Also found this link in one of the other forums here, interesting anyway: http://www.sixgunner.com/paco/45coltrifles.htm
