30-30 topper 130gr. spire info
« on: December 13, 2004, 05:17:34 PM »
We have had a 30-30 topper for two deer seasons, I have it loaded with
37 GR. of Win 748.  I am using 130 grain hornady single shot pistol bullets.
Has anyone harvested game with this bullet?
The only deer we got to shoot at was to far and we took it with the .270. It is my daughters gun but I have carried it on days without her just to "get one" with it. (and I still haven't)
I felt bad that she shot her first deer with the .270 since she helped load the 30-30 shells with me for the hunt.
The deer came out 225 yds away.... And she was happy to take the shot with my gun, but I just wanted her first deer to be with her first gun.
Any bullet info would be appreciated.   Thanks  Brent

If you get a chance on a deer with those 130 gr bullets, please report your results.

Brent I can help you with this one as I have killed 2 deer with the Hornady 130 grain SSSP. I have not recovered a bullet from these two kills but dead is dead. Shot thru the lower boliermaker region, these two whitetails were in the 110-130 lb. range, and didn't go 50 yards after being hit. They were shot with my 30-30 Handi, with a loading of thirty seven and eight tenths (37.8) grains of Winchester 748 in WW cases and a CCI 250 primer.

I quit using this fairly accurate load as I have since gone to Barnes 130 and 140 grain X bullets and Winchester 748 powder. The Barnes bullet was simply more accurate coming out of both of my handi-rifles. I have my rifle set up for 225 yds, as I'm getting around 2600 fps velocity out both of the handis I own. Each of the rifles loading data is different as I imagine the chambers are different as well as the headspacing which makes the loading and the more importantly the pressure different for each rifle.........Chainsaw
