when you hit the switch to break the gun open you will hear and see the ejector snap or spring out fast.if its a extractor you will hear nothing.i converted a couple of my rifles over to extractors,i like that better because i save and reload the brass.on my 20ga ultraslug i left it as a ejector, after a shot at game i hit the switch and the empity goes flying out clearing the chamber for another round

all their guns came with   ejectors for as long as i remember and i have read some are now coming as  extractors but i havnt seen one myself yet.all you do is pull the ejector out of the barrel and you grind some of the metal off so it doesnt snap  when you brake open the gun.the spring inside just pushes the ejector out as you open the gun,the brass doesnt go flying.reloaders like to pull the brass out with their hand and if not into reloading you might as well let it fly.you cant make a request to the factory one way or the other.

Here's the internal difference between the ejector and extractor. I would assume that you could build up the area that is removed in the ejector to extractor conversion. Or just order the old ejector part from H&R.

so both the ejector and extractor are spring driven, which is prone to doing neither?  I thought the move to an extractor would have been to provide a removal system that is not spring driven and will always remove the cartridge.

After doing a better examination of the extractor on the new .204 ruger, the extractor is mechanical, not spring driven, if I try to hold the extractor in the closed position as I open the action, the extractor will over power my attempt to keep it from doing it's thing, extracting the case.

I'm betting all new barrels will have the extractor as one of the biggest complaints about NEF/H&R rifles has been failure to eject.

Does H&R sell the extractor as a factory part or do I have to modify the ejector? I've just purchased a BC in 45-70.

Does anyone know where I can buy a spare ejector in case I butcher one? I've got a Dremmel tool that is looking for something to grind, but I like to have a safety net.

Thanks.

Welcome to GBO, el_rey_lobo! :D I'm sure you can order the ejector itself from H&R, Brownell's or Numrich, but the extractor mechanism on the new barrels is part of the barrel lug itself so, no, the old style ejector can't be converted to the new style mechanical extractor without serious work on the barrel lug. The ejector can be converted to a spring driven extractor, though, as shown at the link.
NEW Style lug on top, OLD style on bottom
