posted this in the optics forum also but needed some quick info

What is the general concensus on BSA? I have a chance to buy a 3x9x40 illuminated reticle Deerhunter from a guy for 70.0. He got it as a gift and does not need it. It is new. I have a BSA catseye and it is a great scope!!
Just wondered what yalls thought are!!

These scopes get a bad rap, but I have had good service out of the Catseye on the .223

Why the venom about BSA?

Jeff I've got a 6x18 sweet 17 on my UH 223 and I love it. AO is almost as good as a range finder and very good repeatability. It does lose a lot of clarity in dim light situations so would not be a choice for evening or early morning hunting. My son had a contender on a 7 mag and it did not last a full season so I would not put one on a heavy recoiling rifle. My two cents, good cheap scope for paper punchin or daylite varmits.

The deerhunter line are base model scopes, they are not nearly the quality of the catseye series. I've had a couple deerhunter scopes and they work but are not great. One of them the reticle went bad and had to be replaced under warranty. I haven't looked at BSA prices lately but $70 for a deerhunter doesn't sound like a very good deal to me.

I took a quick look Natchez sells that scope for $64, and the same one minus the illuminated reticle for $39.

BSA is not as bad as some people sa. True, they are not a high class optical co, but for a guy on a budget with a family to feed. They do very well imo.

Buying BSA scopes is kind of a crap shoot...there are lots of BSA owners at RFC that love em, but OTOH, there are just about as many that will never buy one again because their experience wasn't a good one. I have bought 2, the first one fogged up on me, bad on me, it cost $30...the second at $90 came recommended by Lawdog here at GBO...it's been a good scope and has survived several hundred rounds on a spring air gun. The older Japan made BSA scopes are excellent, but in general I would not recommend any BSA unless I did some research on them. That said, the top of the line BSAs seem to have less bad reports in general, but still they aren't as good as a comparably priced Mueller, Bushnell, Swift or some of the Simmons line like the ATV, Aetec, WTC and WTE. In my book there are too many good scopes with excellent reliability history to resort to taking a chance with the BSA scopes. FWIW, BSA customer service is excellent as I have read of many that returned their scopes and had them replaced in a weeks time.

That is too high for a used BSA scope. You should be able to find it new for much cheaper than that. I bought a BSA 6-18x40 varmint scope at Sports Authority on sale for 69.00. Keep looking for a better deal.

Not sure if this guy is a friend or not, but he is trying to make a hell of a profit off his gift.

Any of the cheap import scopes are a crap shoot...$39.00 after rebates sounds a-lot better than $100...or $200...but if you have to depend on a $40.00 scope to hold up...I think your money would be better spent getting a better quality scope...but...if money is tight and it's all you can spend at the moment..you don't have any choice...you might get lucky with your purchase...and then again...you might not...but I would hate to tell you to get one and then have it fail at the wrong moment and spoil your hunt...and if I had to get one...Id go with the Tasco over the BSA...besides...you at least get a free pair of binoculars with the scope...

This is for the .308 barrel we have been playing with. Trying to get it set up to start range work with. Ok, I got 100.00 to spend on a scope. Shipping and all, not 100.01 either

Jeff, the Simmons ATV at Natchez has got to be one of the best sub $100 scopes on the market, if not the best...if you don't need the 3 power low end.

If you need the 3-9x, I'd recommend the Bushnell banner or trophy at SWFA.com and a phone call to em might bring the price down to $100 including shipping as they are a GBO sponsor.

Jeff, here's a pic of the ATV on the bottom compared to a Whitetail Classic 18 at the top. It's ~13" long if that is a concern.

I have one mounted on my 17M2 Sportster in medium Burris Sig Zees.
