1894 44 mag JAMMED
« on: December 18, 2004, 11:22:29 AM »
I took this gun to the range for the first time. I noticed it is very difficult to load the shells in the mag tube, then after about 25 rounds it jammed.
I had to leave the range with the lever locked open, and a shell stuck about 3/4" out the mag tube. Luckily the chamber is empty. The lever will not budge, and I think I still have 2 rounds in the tube. Before I blow money at a gunsmith, any suggestions??  If not, I am going to dissassemble gun to see if shells will come out. My first impression of the Marlin 1894  44 mag is not good!!

I disassembled the gun. It still had 5 rounds in the tube. The shell involved in the jam is deformed now. I am going to clean this gun, oil it, and put it back together. If I am not happy with it's performance, I will then give someone a hell of a deal on it!!

CHeck your loading gate screw and the screw at the bottom of the trigger guard plate and make sure they are tight.  If the loading gate screw isn't tight it can cause the carrier to rise up and pinch the cartridge, sticking in the magazine tube, it usualy dents the hell out of the case.   Here is a website that will help you completely dissassemble and reassemble the marlin and even help you with the jam.    My guess is that you have a screw loose somewhere, probably the loading gate screw, I've had it happen to mine and did the same thing.  If you do give up on it email me and I might be the one to take you up on that "deal".  Good luck

As a matter of fact, the loading gate screw was loose. Maybe that will remedy the problem. Thanks

Rogmatt,

I'd load up a few empty cartridges, with just the bullet you normally load and work the gun thru several cycles with them before I would load it with "live" ammo., just to make sure all is well. Look-over all the screws to make sure none are loose, as has been suggested. That's the way I do it    .

I have a Marlin 1894SS in 44 mag.  It jams about every 20 to 25 rounds.  Everytime it has jammed, the screw on the receiver on the OPPOSITE  side of the loading gate is loose.  I tighten that screw and it doesn't jam for another 20-25 rounds.  Then it jams and the same screw is loose again.  IS this screw the loading gate screw?  Has anyone else had this problem and is there a remedy?

a dab of the removeable locktite is the only cure I know of for screws that work loose.

I had a similar jam that required disassembly of the gun to clear.  It was pure operator error.  I tried to stuff  ammo into it with the action open.  Since then I have loaded with the action closed and never had another problem.

Myronman,  glad I could help.  I had to figure that out the hard way.  Luckily I was able to just take it down to WWG and they helped me out with it.
