Folks: I've posted several times about my problem child, 22/250 Ultra, Between an oversize chamber, short throat, pressure signs were ever where.  I think I've address these problems with mild loads and minimal sizing.  The one I've yet to address is that when you pull the trigger there's a sharp pain over your right eye where the empty case smacks you in the head.  Yep she pops open when you shoot'er, I though maybe a wrap of duct tape, but kinda slows the reload, and man that glues hard to remove!! Truthfully those that have had this problem how about posting you solution. Please No Duct Tape  :eek: <>< Duce:

Are you resting it on the hinge? I'm not sure that's a good idea on some of the higher pressure chamberings. Mine did that once, might not have cleaned it enough since it was right away, but after the I have been resting it on the forend.
Did it do this with factory loads or only reloads?

I would call H&R in the morning, or after Christmas because I think they might be closed for a week or two, and send it in. If the chamber is over sized and it's regularly popping open there is no need to mess with it. I'd ask for a new barrel.

It sounds like you have some excess material on the locking shelf that won't let the lock fully seat.  Probably the locking lever doesn't come up quite far enough because of it.  If that's the case, my fix on one of my Handis was to take a small flat file and smooth the locking shelf while the barrel was out of the receiver.  As soon as you hit it with the file, the blueing will let you know if there are high spots on the shelf.  After I got finished, I just touched up that area with some cold blue.

I had one barrel that wouldn't lock up at all on a "NM" receiver, so I just swapped it to another receiver and the problem was solved.  That's the reason I have the .357 Mag barrel on a shotgun receiver instead of the "NM" receiver.

If you don't want to do any filing or swapping, send it back to NEF.

File is way too agressive. I stoned both the locking ledge on the barrel and the underside of the locking bolt. It cured the problem, but it also voided the warranty. Unless you have a great deal of faith in your gunsmithing, you are better off to send it back.

Something to try first is simply to open and close the action a few hundred times. Most of the folks with the pop open problem have reported that it goes away after a while as the surfaces wear in.

It's not dangerlous, btw. Just a disconcerting nuisance. The barrel cannot open until the pressure has dropped.

I think you should send the rifle back. Although your problem id not very hard to fix, I would do it without given it a second thought, but I am in Canada and sending it to the factory is not an option.

I just bought a new 223 Ultra I never fired it. The rifle needed what some described above. Hone the latch seat, modify the latch and clean up the the latch bearing behind the standing breech inside the action.

The investment casting is very rough in the corner where the latch sits, preventing the latch to completely engage the latch seat. The upper forward face of the latch was relieved with a concave and fitted to the latch bearing face. The latch bottom bearing surface is ground and hardened and should not be worked on

With the two new dual heavier latch compression springs, the lock up is now positive and strong. At the same time I stoned the ejector and honed the trigger to a very slick 20oz pull I also replaced the trigger return spring. With a light trigger pull you must have a light return spring to insure trigger follow through so the transfer bar stays on top of the firing pin.

Fred is right on this one.  If I had one with those problems, in to mama it would go.  Especially if you have chamber problems.  The latch up thing is usually easy to fix but ANY work on it by you other than a good cleaning will void your warranty.  Tell them how it acts, maybe they will send you something extra, like a trigger job.

If I remember right the gun Duce is talking about is a pre-bankrubtcy gun. One of the first 22-250's they came out with. So, H&R will probally not touch it. Is this the case, Duce. If it is guys he will have to find a fix on his own.
