For handgun hunting, do y'all prefer composite/rubber, wood, laminate? I shoot handgun silhouette, so I'm used to putting 40 rnds of .44 Mag downrange through a Bisley with stock grips. But I'm setting up an Encore for hunting deer, and I'm curious what y'all prefer.

Hello I prefer pachs or hoques in rubber for better control and they soften recoil.

When I had an Encore the stock wood grip was too big for me and I replaced them with the factory rubber grip, they did a great job, and the trigger reach, at least for me, was much improved.

Mt Encore has wooden grips and they do a fine job for me, but the largest handgun cal. I use it for is the .357 max., so I`m not getting much recoil with it. I have rubber grips on one of my .454`s and they are much prefered on it, and also on my .500 S&W. The rubber grips do soften the recoil alot on the bigger kickers.

Ditto to what Gregory said above. My .44 in 12 inch Encore was a bit hard to manage with the wood grips and forend but when I changed to the rubber, I found it to be more manageable and a better fit. Kept the wood for future use and resale but for a day of shooting or hunting, the rubber grip and forend will be on it.

I too am in the synthetic camp. In fact, not only do I prefer rubber grips, they have to be really ugly too. That's just coincidental, of course, but I do like the feel of Hogue or Pachmayr grips. I find it easier to return to my proper grip and pressure with the rubber grips. I think this is because the rubber is not as slippery as wood. I have contoured wooden grips and they are more difficult to get a good repeatable grip on. Granted, it's largely a matter of practice, if there weren't a benefit to me I'd be using something prettier. Is there an uglier gun than a 38 special blued K frame with gray Hogue grips on it?

Side question for you people who use rubber grips. Have you ever tried the Herretts Jordon Troopers in place of your rubber grips? I've a set of these coming, shortly, for my 629-4 M/G, and now I'm wondering if I couldn't of saved some money? And I am considering putting a pair of the X frame grips on my 629 Classic for deer hunting. Sorry, didn't mean to hi-jack your post.

Maybe, if carpletunnel isn't a factor. Pretty but, that's not a factor when you can't sleep for the pain, or feel your hands at the end of your arms? Think about this, they used to say the same thing about the noise, before we (shooters) all went deaf. I know that members of the S&W forum (of which I'm a member, too) preach this stuff but, that's not what's happening in the real world. I make a living in the construction industry and have for 30+ years, and have to earn my bread by the sweat of my brow, not by sitting in one spot and letting someone else do the manual labor (read: I have to be able to work). Rant mode off.
