Deer Barrel
« on: December 23, 2004, 09:23:58 AM »
I have decided that next year i want the hunt deer with a hand gun.  I have a contender in 44mag with a 10in barrel and a pro point sight on it.  I use it mainly for targets ans snakes with rat shot.  I also have an encore frame.  What is a good combinaton for deer I am willing to purchase a new barrel for the contender or the encore.  I was looking at a 7mm-08 barrel for the encore or a 30-30 barrel for the contender or both.  Does anyone have any better suggestions.  I also reload.  Thanks for any help.

I happen to have both the 30-30 Contender (14") and a 7-08 Encore (15") that I use for deer and other critters. In my area, rarely do I have shots exceeding 100yds, so both guns do a fine job on whitetails. The Contender is outfitted with a red-dot Aimpoint, which is nice for quick target acquisition and low-light conditions. I've got a Bushnell 2x on the Encore that has a good FOV at shooting distances I usually encounter. You have a good barrel already, but if you're like most of us here, you need to offer an occasional "Ben Franklin" as a sacrifice to the Thompson/Center gods. Trust in the fact that you will always be rewarded!

I'd recommend you start with your 44 Mag barrel.  You are familiar with it and out to 100 yds you are all set.  Spend your money on ammo for practice.
If you get hooked, you can start looking for a longer range barrel.
I took the deer pictured in my avatar with a10" 44 Mag TC.

I think that if your shots are within 100 yards, the 44 mag will take deer as well as anything else. But if you need more range or if you want to reduce your recoil, I would go to the 7-08 in the encore, or 7-30 or 30-30 AI in the contender since you reload. Any of these should get you out to 175-200 yards with a spire point bullet if you can shoot that well. The main thing to do is get your rig set up as soon as you can, and put in the time to practice, practice, practice. Your familiarity with your pistol will be as much a factor of cleanly killing a deer as your caliber selection.

I really like the super 14 in 7-30 waters.  I would recommend it highly.
