7x64 Brenneke Ammo
« on: December 19, 2004, 03:39:49 AM »
I haven't gotten out to the range with my new Handi in 7x64 Brenneke yet, hope to today,  but I have aquired a Swft Premier 2-7x40 scope for it and have it mounted and bore sighted. I highly recommend these scopes BTW. I also have purchased two boxes of factory ammo, one is the Federal Premium loaded with 160 gr. Nosler Partitions and the other is Norma loaded with 150 gr. SP's. I was fortunate in that the loaded Norma ammo only cost $20.92 for 20 rounds. The brass alone is almost that much from Midway.
Ok so I did a search just to see what other ammo I might find for this unique caliber and I ran across some Speer Nitrex loaded with both the 160 and 175 gr. Grand Slams. Anybody have some feedback on the Grand Slam bullets. I figure MV will be somewhere around 2700-2900, not sure about the BC on this bullet in .284.

The 160's bc is...0.387 and the 175's bc is..0.465....both of them should be heavy hitters.....Speer's #13 states you can use their 280 Remington data for the Brenneke or the 7-06 wildcat...so...160's velocities from them are about 2854 fps for the max loading....and the 175 around 2644 fps........the sectional density for the 160 is 0.283....and the 175...0.310....both should serve you well...I would have to check on the Norma site to see what they have the 150's at with it...and from the guys over at my gun dealers...the Speer Nitrex ammo is pretty darn good in just about any caliber made with it...

Well not much to tell but I'll tell it anyway. When I first got to our make-shift shooting range there was a fellow there who was shooting a couple of pistols and so I waited about 45 minutes for him to finish. It was pretty windy but the hill we shoot into is pretty high and facing the north so it blocked most of the wind and the sun was out to warm the creaky bones alittle. It was about noon I guess when I set my targets at 25 yards and fired the first shot with the Norma 150's. Dead center and 6" left. Adjusted the Swift and fired the second, dead center and 3" left. Adjusted again, dead center! Moved out to 50 yards and fired one and jerked it so missed the paper all together. Then when I opened the action, the dreaded stuck case problem arose. I didn't have a cleaning rod with me but had a friend only about 2 miles away, gave him a call and headed over. Knocked out the case very easy with one light tap, then reinserted it and it stuck again. Tried some of the other fired Norma cases and none stuck so back to the range. My friend decided he'd go too and when I returned, there was another family whom I know that arrived at the same time and began shooting beside me and then my friend arrived and started shooting so it was kinda hard to concentrate after that, it's Ok tho.  I went ahead and fired several more rounds until I was getting into about 2" at 50 yards (not really holding consistently) and left it that way. Decided to go out and scout for hogs after that, got stuck in the mighty 'Yota 4x4 (a hard thing to do), did more scouting, found a dead bore that would go about 200 that someone must have shot and lost and the coyotes found, did some more riding and scouting, then went back out at sunset and sat and waited for hogs, but no luck, ran into Digger afterwards and visited a while, shot a couple of his hot rounds in his 45-70  ouch! and got home around 7:30 p.m. A full day.
I'll clean the gun real good today and probably do some polishing on the chamber. I feel like some of the lubricant that I had flushed the action with may have gotten into it, who knows for sure, but I did have a total of two stuck cases with the Norma ammo, more to come on that one I guess. I'll try to get back out one day during this week and work on it some more out to 100 yards. Will probably go for a 1-1.5" high setting at 50 yards and see where that puts me at 100 with both ammos. I'll post more then.

Hmmm....I guess there was a bit to tell after all. :D

Sounds like you got it figured out...had the same problem with the bull barrelled 308 with too much lubricant in it...and polishing the chamber and bore isn't going to hurt it...I wound up working that ejector about 100 times by hand till it didn't do that anymore...

I finnaly found the ballistic page for Norma
http://www.norma.cc/sida/eng/index.html

Click on Ballistic...then drop to the line below that and click on Ballistic again...you get it in English or metric from there...you'll get a little pop-up box on your screen...don't click on it...it's their program getting ready to run...then just wait for it to load...and  then you can choose which load or define your own load from within it...they have their bullets and hunting loads on the left menue's...

I looked at the 156 grain Oryx loading...for your 1-1/2" high at 50 yards I got this...you would be zero at 23 yards... 0.2" high at 25 yards....+ 1-1/2" at 50 yards.....+3.3 at 100 yards....topping out at +3.9" at 141 yards...to a zero at 250 yards....and being -4.7" low at 300....this is with a MV of 2789fps...and a BC of 0.330.....and the scope 1.5" above the bore.... that they show for the load...not bad....

Mac

PS...I forgot to ask ya...did you o-ring it first...or shoot it as it came to ya???

No O-ring, just like it came OTB. I think a dead on zero at 25 yds. is gonna get me about where I would want to be out to 300 yds. I'm just guessing here, before I go look, but I would imagine somewhere in the neighborhood of a 6" kill zone at 300 yds. with the Norma and the Federals should be easier to calculate than that. Just checked and the Norma shows a MV of 2890, that's pretty dang fast out of a 7mm ain't it.
Oh yea, she's got a pretty good kick too. More felt recoil than I anticipated. May have to add a little weight to the buttstock or trade over to some laminated stocks.

Just checked on the Norma site and the bullet that is in the ammo I bought is the same as the 97g/150SP that they have listed for their 270Win. load. Hmmm.........mine must be little outdated. Anyway, the back of the box lists the ballistics and that's where I got the MV at. That's one of the best Ballistic calculators on their site I've seen in while. Federal doesn't show the 7x64 on their site either. Guess I'll have to make a guess based on the .280 load data. Thanks for the Nitrex go ahead too. Got a feeling that this gun is gonna be fun to experiment with, both in factories and reloads.
