Cold weather question

As the temperature is beginning to drop what do you do about your ears?  Thinking frostbite is not "cowboy."

It ain't real cowboy, but when I used to snow ski a lot, I learned to put vaseline on my ears.  A good, light coat puts a real barrier to cold.  Works on your toes too..

An old fashioned wool watch cap is original and warm. Cabela's also has the bomber style fur hat with earflaps which is an old design.

Certainly your "real deal" cowboys (old-time edition) must have had to deal with the cold on a regular basis, especially if they were in the northern states; it don't get much colder than Montana or North Dakota.  My impression is many folks were relatively "formal"-looking in their attire: jackets, ties, vests, derby hats ... not all "movie-cowboy"-looking.  That said, I think folks just wrapped a wool scarf around their head, tied under the chin ... sort of looked like they had a toothache.  Not too "cool" looking, but probably effective.  Modern cowboys probably got "hoody" sweatshirts.

:cb2: This ain't very cowboy either, but I like my Peltor electronic behind-the-neck Tactical muffs. Keeps the ears toasty and can wear 'em with my hat. Also great for hunting, too. (I shoot modern class . . .)

Cowboy with cold ears
« Reply #10 on: December 03, 2004, 08:18:05 PM »
When nobody is around, you wuss out by sliding the muffler from around your neck and put it over the top of head around the ears like a hood and put your hat back on.

Sometimes a worn thin wool blanket is worn over the shoulders around the neck under your slicker and this too can be pulled up over the top of the head and put the hat back on top.

A hole cut in the blanket for the face works best wearing any blanket serape style under your range coat.A piece of rope tied around your coat holds it closed since the buttons and holes won't meet.

I read of the Cowboys who spent their first winter in Montana and Wyoming who didn't have the sheeps wool-lined coats and chaps needed to survive the intense cold and cutting wind, thus the blankets and ropes around the coats.

I live in North Dakota, up here cowboys wear what works. Its one thing seeing a cowboy at the rodeo, but quite different at home. We have 4 horses, so when it is -65 and I am out with the critters I dress to stay warm. At -65 exposed skin freezes on contact with the air. If your ears are uncovered you will loose them. Of course I wear cartharts winter wear . We start our CAS season in march, last year our first shoot was in a blizzard....boy was that fun.....
