Ruger #1 scope choice
« on: December 14, 2004, 06:59:17 AM »
I am purchasing a Ruger #1V in 25-06.  The rifle will be used for target and possibly grounhogs.  I was thinking of a Bushnell Elite 4200 4X16X40.  Does anyone have experience with this combination?  I am concerned with eye relief.  I posted this on the Ruger forum also.  Thanks.

I have 2 of those scopes with 40mm objectives, and I think another 2 with 50mm objectives - they are EXCELLENT scopes.  As for the Ruger #1, given the contour - or lack thereof - of the barrel, you really shouldn't use a scope with objectives larger than 40mm, especially when the scope, like the one you want, has an AO on it.  Even then you will use higher than normal rings.

Yeah well, I dunno. Ruger #1s have some special scope issues most guns do not. You really need two things from a scope to properly fit it to a #1. Those things are long eye relief and a relationship between objective bell and turret that allow it to be pushed Waaaay to the rear.

That's the single biggest concern in scoping a #1 is getting the eye piece far enough back to get full view thru scope. A lot of scopes just won't cut it. The #1 is really made poorly in this regard. I'd try to play around with the scopes with rifle in hand if you can to see if it's gonna work.

In the 2004 Ruger catolog they make single offset and double offset scope rings for the No. 1V. would probably get the scope back quite a bit, plus the 4200's are sorta long to begin with. :D

Burris makes a Ruger to Weaver adapter that allows you to move the scope back about 1/2" to 3/4". Also I like the long tube on the Zeiss Conquest 4.5 x 14 - it makes a nice set-up for the #1.
