to check on the progress of the pair of EMF Dakotas they are to send me for product testing. Confirmed they have the FFL from my local dealer (Sportsman's Exchange in Gadsden). Said he is headed out to a big CAS Shoot tomorrow but will get them off to me next week when he gets back.

While I had him on the phone I hit him up for a Hartford Model 92 with case colored receiver and 20" octagon barrel. He allowed as how he thought he could manage that too.

So looks like deciding on a shotgun to replace my 28 ga. will make me SASS legal on guns. Forgot to ask how much the rifle would cost me to keep it but based on the prices I'm getting on the revolvers if I keep them it will be a real good one. They don't need used guns back and would rather they stay in the hands of writers who test them. I'm sure they are hoping for additional write ups in the future and should get them from me as I write of my adventures in CAS.

So what type do you think you are going to be using sxs or pump.

Well even tho I've been shooting pump guns since I was about 10 years old back in 1955 I suspect I'll stay with a SXS double because to me it just seems more period correct. Not that a lever action in .45 LC is very period correct but at least the look of the rifle will be correct even if not the caliber.

I just can't imagine that many Win. Model 97s were actually in use in the old west. I think allowing them is merely a concession to the equipment race that always develops in ALL shooting sports among the top shooters.

I'm not going into CAS with intentions of being competitive or trying to win, only to have fun shooting and associating with the people. So I'll likely try to keep the look of the equipment as close as I can to what I'd expect to have been in use.

Do you have an idea when you might be posting your evaluations of the CAS guns? Might have to hold off buying for the Mrs. till then.

Can't rightly say when the final review will happen but as soon as I get them I'll give an evaluation of them for appearance, tightness and other things visual. I'll do some shooting as soon as possible and determine somewhat the accuracy and point of impact in relationship to point of aim. All of this will be posted here on the forum as it happens.

I'm guessing the final report won't come until after the first match in March at best but should be reporting to you on them as I work witht hem between now and then.

The other one I had just like this pair was superb in fit and finish. Very tight with no end shake or side to side play in cylinder. Accuracy as to group size was really limited by my ability to see to shoot it rather than the gun. Groups were so small I could hardly believe I was shooting them with such a short barrel gun. The trigger was perfect right out of the box. No way I'd have considered any work needed on it and that's from a person who has been shooting S&Ws for the last almost 40 years.

The only compliant I had was it shot wide left of point of aim by what I considered too much. Now with ya'll telling me how big the targets are and how close I'm not so sure it was shooting too far left to have done OK.

That knowledge is what led me to chose the Dakotas to request for testing.

Now I'd have to think that a man of Marshall Graybeard's caliber (pun intended) would only shoot the real stuff, the holy black of course. That new fangled stuff won't never catch on. Heck jest the other day I heard another nimrod done blew up his Colt using thet stuff. RR

Been on phone a BUNCH today calling folks to try and line up more advertisers and things I need for shooting. Got some ammo lined up from Hornady and Black Hills and some bullets to load from Hornady. Tried to contact PMC but seems no one was home. :-D

You might try Black Dawg for smokey stuff. I think they load with real BP. Ten-X and ammodirect use a substitute.
