T7 Crud Ring Worse in Cold Weather???
« on: December 20, 2004, 05:10:12 PM »
I went to the range last Wed to check the 209X50 and after one shot. I'm shooting  two 50 gr T7 pellets. I could not load another round past the crude ring no matter how hard I pushed. My mark on the ramrod was and inch off after one shot. The temp was 30 degrees.
In Oct I fired 30  shots and was cleaing after 6 or 7 shots. When I seated another round you could feel the sabot hit the crude ring but I was able to push a little harder and it would go past the crud ring.

I think the controling factor is humidity not temperature. I bet the humidity has dropped with the colder weather. I have a real problem with the crud ring here even with a .25ACP breechplug conversion. I live in Arizona and the humidity is real low.

I shot my 209x50 today in 18 degree temps. and after 1 shot my ramrod mark stopped about 3/4" from being seated.  That's never happened before, so I guess the low temp or low humidity does affect the crud ring.  I'm shooting loose T7, Winchester 209's, and 250 gr. Barnes Expanders.

I usually can shoot 3-5 shots before the crud ring gets bad enough to cause problems in warm weather.  Last weekend it was 20 degrees and I shot a deer and reloaded the gun in a treestand.  Just pushed the ramrod with my gloved hand to seat the bullet, the crud ring did not seem any worse.

20 degrees and dry or 20 degrees and high humidity? I still think the humidity might be the controlling factor.

Beats me on the humidity, my built in barometer was broken.  It was cloudy, windy and snowing.

If the snow was kind of wet and not squeeky to walk on it may have been relatively humid (No pun intended). As it gets a lot colder the humidity drys up pretty fast.
