9.3 x 57 backed out primers
« on: December 18, 2004, 06:32:47 PM »
I took my Husqvarna M 46A to the range for the first time today.  Loads were Speer 270 gr., 40 gr. IMR 3031, and new Norma cases.  I checked the cases after firing a few rounds and found the primers were backing out a little.  Necks were not split and no unusual expanding was seen.

Is this a headspace problem or something else?
Charles

I don't have any experience with that particular cartridge or rifle, but backed out primers are usually an indication of a light load, as the case never expands enough to push the case head back against the bolt face and keep the primer seated.

A headspace problem usually results in flattened primers, as the primer gets slammed back into the pocket when the case expands and the case head makes contact with the bolt face.
Close only counts in horse shoes and hand grenades.

charlesr:  The only load I show for the 9.3x57mm is with 50.9 grains of VVN140 powder for 2260'/sec at 37.7K psi.  I don't have my powder charts with me right now to compare 3031 with N140 for burning rates but I may have to agree with KYsquirrelsniper that your load may be too light.  Your Husaky is a good strong rifle.  I would work up those loads incrementally until I found one that shot well and didn't back those primers out.  HTH.  Mikey.

Charles,
I have the same rifle and shoot 44gr of 3031 with 250gr Ballistic Tips.  No problem with primers, extraction, etc.

I've got a 9.3X57 Mod. 46 ,I've worked up to 44 gr.s of IMR 3031 with the 270 Speer ,Try increaseing your IMR 3031 a little at a time, MAX is 45gr.s of IMR 3031 ,I don't have it in print,just Verbal !
I've not had time for serious testing for this round.

My 9.3X57 is 2nd. down in pic.
