Sights and scopes
« on: December 08, 2004, 10:22:37 AM »
Gentlemen I have yet another newbie question.  I finally ordered my 12" stainless 7mm-08 barrel and am anxiously awaiting its arrival.  My question is this... do the front and or rear sights have to be removed to mount a scope?  Thanks again for helping.

Only the rear sight must be removed---the scope bases use the same holes ---- some remove the front sight for esthetic reasons only.    pg

Related Contender newbie question...

Do all of the Contender barrels typically come from the factory w/iron sights? I realize that some of the specialty barrels (.45/.410, shotgun, etc.) won't.

I'm thinking of a .22LR Match barrel, for example.

Thanks, -Uncle Howie

Since this is a newbie thread could someone please explain the proper way to remove the rear sight on a thompson barrel so I can mount a scope base?

I'm not sure on the encores, but on the contender you have to drive out the front pin that the sight hinges on. That will allow you to get to the screws underneath and remove them. Like I said, though, I'm not sure if the encore works the same way or not. I've never tried to take one off of one.
All of the standard barrels that I've had from the factory have had sights on them except for the ones in the hunter configuration with a muzzle tamer on them. My 22 match has a front sight, but I left it on and mounted a scope on the rear.
