Which one would you choose?
« on: December 17, 2004, 02:57:36 AM »
Hi all, I've been trying to find a Big Bore to round off my battery and my luck hasn't been too good lately. I found a Win 70 SG in 416 Rem, a Ruger M77 RSM in 416 Rigby and a M77 RSM in .375 H&H. I hadn't really considered a .416 and outside of the price, which of these calibers would work out best for an Alaskan hunt and maybe an African trip? It would also be a backup deer/moose rifle. Thanks! CEJ...

I personally like the 375 H&H myself. But get what you think you would really need.  :D

My criteria were similar to yours and I picked the 375. A rifle crank I know also says that the 416 Rigby is very nice also, and with a rifle of appropriate weight has surprisingly mild recoil for a big bore.  I am shooting 235 grain Speer bullets for the 375 to practice and probably as backup for deer. Recoil is not bad at all. My rifle weighs 9.5 pounds loaded.  I have read posts here from people who have the lighter Model 70 Winchester with synthetic stock that it kicks pretty hard. Apparently an extra pound goes a long way in terms of taming recoil.

The .375 H&H is to Africa what the .30-06 is to America. More gun is fun, but not really needed. It is also a bit much for Alaska unless you are a guide. I chose this round as my big gun based on the above, and as a nice bonus trajectory is about the same as my "aught six"!

CEJ1895,

Everyone should have a .375 in their safe.  Get the Ruger M77 RSM in the H&H and after you have gotten used to it have it re-chambered to .375 Weatherby.  Lawdog

Lawdog, Thanks for the advice, I haven't forgotten about the .375 Wby   I've got a line now on a Ruger m77 RSM, a Win 70 Supergrade and a Ruger M77 Tropical Rifle all in .375 H&H. Can you tell me the difference between the M77 RSM and the M77 Tropical? My company has banned access to the gun makers sights so I can't look them up! Thanks in advance! CEJ...

Why was the 375 Weatherby dropped by Weatherby? Was there a problem with it?

Nobody bought it!

You could only get it in a Mark V, and it never really caught on.

The .375 Weatherby was dropped in favor of the .378 Weatherby but it was reintroduced in 2001 by popular demand.  Seems like shooters wanted the added velocity but didn't like the recoil of the .378.  I have both and I have to agree, the recoil of the .378 is not for the timid.  The .375 Weatherby combines accuracy, power and does it without that massive recoil so NO muzzle brake is needed.

CEJ1895,

I'll check my books and get back to you about those Rugers in a couple of days when I get home.  In the mean time maybe someone else knows the difference.  Lawdog

I don't recall Ruger using the "Tropical" designation for any model other than the # 1 Single Shot.

With the 300 grain bullet, the 416 Rem is a 375 plus.  Why settle for a 30-06 when a 300 Win Mag will work better?  And why settle for a 375 when a 416 will shoot the distance of a 375 with a larger diameter bullet? Times are changing, don't settle for a rifle of the past.  Keep up with the modern hunters and get the winchester 416.

The .375 is probably in the top five claibers here in Alaska.   It is also one that you could probably buy ammo for almost anywhere up here if you needed it.  The others you probaly could buy ammo in the Anchorage, Fairbanks and Juneau areas but have to search elsewhere.

warf73 - You're one lucky man to have a wife like that! Ramrod - I thought the same thing but I didn't know for sure, the seller must have screwed up when he advertised it. Anyway it looks like that's a moot point since it's not listed anymore  :x  Oh well, I think I'll just keep looking for a Ruger M77 RSM in .375. It will go well with my Ruger M77 Express in 06! Thanks for all your help everyone! I just have to hope that the gun gods smile on me soon! Missed 4 so far    CEJ...

Thanks Lawdog  :D I'll check them out! Can't access those sites from here (work) they've got them blocked. I did start checking on 'smiths to rechamber it to the .375 WBY  when I'm ready  I may just bite the bullet and buy a new Ruger M77 RSM to match my Express rifle. Thanks again to everyone! I'm pretty happy with my Winchester Safari grade, and I can keep myself in ammo for the rest of my life with what I saved over the Ruger.
Oh and by the way, thanks Redhawk1, for spanking crow_feather, and saving me the trouble.  I shoot traditional muzzleloaders like him, but stick to practical, traditional, and re-sellable calibers in my centerfires.

I have bought some very modern cap locks.  One of em comes from 1836, a darn good underhammer.  I also got myself a Tryon, another modern practical sidelock.

But when it comes to big bores, I say shoot the biggest you can.  I don't mess with what has or hasn't ammo available, I load my own.  I don't worry about what is popular or what is good for resale, cause I want the most I can get that I can handle.  Why settle for something that is almost there? Go all the way and get the 416.

Lawdog - Thanks again for the information, I just contacted a couple of people with Win 70's in 375 H&H, so I'll let you know what happens. I really would have preferred a used Ruger M77 RSM but if their out there nobody's selling them!   I did get a price on a new one but the CHRISTmas bonus is going to have to be a lot better than last year!   CEJ...

crow_feather - Maybe next time  :-D I've got to make more room in the gun case...  :-) But you never know, a Ruger RSM in 416 might just show up while I'm waiting for these .375 guys to get back to me.... Merry Christmas to everyone!
