My first Yugo SKS, some questions?
« on: October 02, 2004, 01:13:15 PM »
I just bought my first Yugo SKS today, and have some questions.  I raised the front grenade launcher site up to oil the surrounding area and could not get it to come down into the unused position, it was locked upright by a spring loaded plunger.  I had to use 2 cleaning rod ends pushing on both sides of the plunger at the same time, while using my chin to push down to put it down.  Is there a proper way to do this?

There is a 3 position gas selector button on the top, which position is the right one for shooting the gun?

The trigger guard appears to be milled, like the Russian ones, instead of stamped like the Chinese.  Are these good triggers?

I have owned 2 SKS rifles before, a Chinese, and a Russian and the Yugo is a different animal.

Any answers to the above questions would be appreciated.  Is there anything else I should watch out for on these unique guns?

Thanks.

If I remember correctly when the ladder is down the gas knob is all the way to the right against the ladder that gives the gas to the system so its on rifle when its in the centerline of the rifle barrel with the ladder up thats when its in Gernade launcher mode and the gas is shut off.

BTW not all the chinese were stamped trigger guards there are many milled guards and most of mine are milled.  But there is one rare chinese sks with a stamped reciever too that one will be worth bucks in the future.  I've only seen one. The Yugo is a different sks it seems a lot heavier even in the M59 without the gernade launcher for some reason.

I believe I have read the Romanian sks's were just equal to the russians in building an sks with the best quality sks going to the chinese ones they really improved on the sks mainly because they developed it more into so many different models.  I like them all if you get one that shoots well it will shoot well for ever there just that dam reliable.  With the chinese making so many different models i wonder if they ever made a handgun "sks" that would be awesome!!!  Probably much better than a broomhandle.  Imagine it with a 50rd mag or 75rd drum mag?

Yugo Barrel

Unlike the others, the Yugo one doesn't have a chromed barrel.  Something about their not having any great natural chrome deposits and their strained relations with Russia at the time.  Shouldn't be a big deal as long as you don't take it into the jungle...
Also interesting, the grenade launcher is supposedly NATO.  I'm not sure why.
