I have a 45/70 repro that I want to use for hunting and some target shooting, I've decided that I want to use a "ladder" style barrel sight. My question is if anyone knows where I can find this type sight with peep holes instead of notch or buckhorn style on both the elevator and short range sight.

peeps are generally a couple inches from the eye.. in this case on the ladder it will be down barrel quite aways and maybe could work fine, maybe not. .. tape a peice of black paper or better drill a hole in some sheet metal, blaken the metal with candle tape it on the sight you have or on the barrel, and see where you will end up with your unconventional idea.. in my case the ladder sight as it is works very well, the ladder for long range, and the buckhorn for finding game in poor light close range. .. good luck dave.

Thanks for the response Dave, I have tried the peep idea with a sight that I made,drilled about a 1/8 hole with about 5-6" of eye relief and works well. I haven't been able to figurre a good way to make the slider portion of the sight. sighted the fixed sight at 100 yds. and want to be able to elevate to 200 & 250. I currently am shooting a 420 flat nose at about 1300 fps, do you have any idea what the additional height of the 200 & 250 holes should be. Thanks again, Steve

It sounds like you need a copy of the Remington Â“Rough & ReadyÂ” rear barrel sight. It was a combination peep & openl sight.

It was a ladder sight that when folded down had a buckhorn or a semi buckhorn sight(?), then when lifted up, it had sliding peep sight.

I donÂ’t know where you find a repro, but IÂ’d contact Dave Higginbotham @ Lone Star Rifles. Dave makes probably the finest copy of the Remington Pattern Rolling Block.

If you find either an original or a repro, I donÂ’t think that it will be inexpensiveÂ…..

trapper Jack That is it exactly. I'm going to buy this sight and make the fixed short range notch sight into a peep and I'm good to go. Thanks for the link! Steve
